Really? That's idiotic! Where did you hear that?

At any rate, the truth is that trackpoints and waypoints in GPX files can contain pretty much any tag, XML geeks be damned. And "speed" is the accepted name for speed/velocity, so stick with it.

(GPS Visualizer will honor the <speed> tag if it's there, but if it isn't present, and you ask for colorization by speed, it calculates it manually from the time and distance.)

To quote Dan Foster from Topografix:

You asked about <speed> and <course>. These were present in GPX 1.0, and dropped (inadvertently, by me) in GPX 1.1. Nobody replied to my earlier message about what we should do about them going forward.
As Dave W. points out, you can't include them in a valid GPX 1.1 file.

Well, then, I'm sticking with creating files as GPX 1.0 unless they put it back in. It's just silly to REMOVE support for a useful tag.

Here is a sample of a track taken today. I got this to load into www.motionbased.com eventually, the display there is really cool as you can play the track, a dot follows the route and you can see it start and stop as well as speed changes etc, either on a map or a photo background. I'll check if it's ok to post screenshots or not.

Seems I can add a link, click here http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/i...undType=street then click "Map Player". Change the Colorization to speed, slow the playback speed and click play. Please let me know if the link works ok.

Something I came across when surfing for some compoennts for Delphi (*hint*build in sunrise/set calc*hint*). "The latitudes and longitudes values are in degrees. The posivie values indicate North/South, and the Negaive Values indicate South/East. To use these values in the TSunTime component, just set the latitude and longitude values respectively to the Latitude.Value and Longitude.Value properties of the component."

The TSunTime ocmponent sounds interesting, I'm just not sure what it'll add in my situation though. Do you want to also log sunset and sunrise times in the log?

I only posted that to say that maybe you don't read the North/South, East/West readings and that's why the data is off. GammaControl v.5 already uses TSunTime

I need to do some testing, the component authors say the LAT/NON should be negative or positive to indicate N/S or E/W but it just isn't for me, I suspect maybe another event will yield better results and hope to have time to try tonight.

Working on GPS apps is a real pain in the rear though as it's hard to program while driving and the GPS doesn't give very interesting data hwhile hanging out of my window! Fun fun fun!

Could that component be used to do calculations to make one of those shaded clock faces over a world map, the ones that show where it is light and dark? I guess so, maybe?
