I can start stop this easily with an AutoIT script. I'll put something together and report back.
Okay, a new lease of life, all excited and motivated to start again, let's see how long it lasts! Attached to this post is a zip file containing an installer, this will install two executables, GPSConfig.exe and GPSTrack.exe, more details along with screenshots are in the next post. Note that it isn't actually building a log yet but it is testing how well it can talk to your GPS. Give it a try, see if it works with your GPS...
Okay file is too big to attach, download it here http://www.lawlai.com/mp3car/GPSTrack.zip
FIRST run GPSConfig.exe, this will let you configure the ports and so on for your GPS. Choose the appropriate settings and click "Connect". Once you are happy click "Save Settings" to create an INI file.
This INI file is then used by GPSTrack.exe, fire it up and it should read the settings from the INI file you just created. Click "Start" and it should start displaying some basic GPS data.
That's it for now but assuming this works logging should be pretty easy.

Is there any possibility of having the program log a starting/stopping address to expord to Notepad/Word etc. This would be good because I use my car for work and I could calculate my mileage more precisely.

Okay, I have a question for everyone. I havn't searched because i doubt its been done yet. and yes i know everything has been done in here, maybe so and maybe not. I need a GPS map program that can track all my friends while there driving and report back to one map program. Sort of what ukchris is doing but from multiple sources and displayed in real time on one map. Possibly with different ID's. So you would pull up the map and it would download in real time all the locations of all my friends cars and place them on a map.
If there is something like that out there someone please let me know where i can get it. I've got money to burn if thats what it takes.
Um, I guess this is where you put something witty.WITTY

Nextel are supposed to have some sort of live tracking system using their GPS cell phones.
OK, I tried it out (nice installer!). Yes, I followed your instructions, and it is definitely working.Originally Posted by ukchris
The only odd thing is that the 4 fields bellw 'Geographic Position (GLL)' are never populated. All other graphs/fields are populated by the NMEA stream etc.
Hope this helps.
PS: The Config app is not being installed oin the Start Menu, only the Tracker app. I would add both w/ installer.
What's next? Auto logging, etc? Are you taking feature requests? I have some good ideasof how this could/should be implemented and the needed features to make it useful with little interaction.
Thanks!

A thought - optionally, perhaps, once the app is initially configured, logging could be initiated via commandline w/ switches, to automatically log to a specified file, and visibly runs only in the SysTray.
In this case, it would also be cool for it to support variables, such as parsing date and time..
e.g. C:\>gpstrack.exe c:\log\gpslog_%date-%time%.ext
btw - what language is this written in?
Installer - isn't it cool? I found this neat freeware installer called InnoSetup, it really is awesome. I'll clean up some of the icons int he start menu and so on later, it was just rushed together.
GLL - same here, I'll sort it out.
Next I hope to get it saving the track to a GPX file probably, at least for now, with manual start/stop buttons. After that the option to start the track automatically when the app starts and end it when the program terminates.
tk!2k4 - Switches and tray stuff to come later once the fundamentals are working but yes, all you say is good, auto start, log file details etc etc.
It's written in Delphi 6, more than happy to share the code with anyone who is interested and expecially anyone who wants to help. There really isn't much to it yet as the GPS component I'm using does the clever stuff.
Chris.
Thanks ukchris. Looks like it is coming together nicely. I'll be watching this thread for updates(no rush!)
