    Question win me worth it?

I'm running a cyrix 200+, 32mb ram with Win 98 SE right now.

I'm wondering if it would be worth it to go to Win ME for the faster boot and shutdown times or would it be too slow on a cyrix/32mb system?

    Thanks

I would not recomend going to Win ME with your setup. My parents have about the same type of computer (cyrix 200/32MB) as their main computer in the house and all it runs is win 95 since you can see a slowdown with win 98 and more with win ME.

I am playing with winME right now. It has fantastically fast shutdowns (like 3 seconds)

Boot up seems about the same, maybe a bit quicker.

I am still trying to get all my hardware (that works under win98) to work properly.

My opinion is to just try it. I used the $50 upgrade, on a clean install, I just needed to pop in my win98 disk for a few seconds while it checked for something.

I did not notice a significant reduction of boot time with ME over 98. I am running 98 on a p166 with 32 meg and have a 6,500 playlist loading at boot. I am power to music in 60 seconds and don't think I can do much better. If anyone thinks I can do better, however, I'm all ears.

    Kevin,

Yep, if you can get hibernation to work your boot up will most likely be cut in half.

    Question

How does this hibernation stuff work? As long as all your software is compatible is it just like putting the computer in standby but it sucks no juice?

    schrodos,

It's been talked about a dozen times but I'll tell ya the simple version anyways . What it does is write everything that's in your RAM onto your hard disk and then powers off (absolutely no power). Then when you boot up again, it goes directly to that section on your hard drive and puts it all back into your RAM, so basically you start off directly where you left off. I have it working flawlessly on my system. I press a little red button in my ash tray to go into hibernation and then power off the inverter from another switch in my ash tray. It takes 20 seconds for me to completely boot up from hibernation, and that includes beginning directly in the song where I left off after hibernation.
