    Post Networking?

Well what I was doing to transfer my mp3s was having my mp3 box start with a boot manager that times out. In problem is it is hard to know when to press #2 to boot windows when there is no screen.

What I would like to know is how to make windows 95 or 98 boot up in dos mode every single time you boot. And then start windows when it is needed.

Another way to do this would to network it through dos. I want to know if I can network a dos system with my windows 9x system? How?

While on the topic anyone ever try wirless RF networking from their car to their house? I am just going to run a huge RJ45 crosscable off my uppstars back deck to my car, see if someone trips on it or drives through it!

There's a configuration option in c:\msdos.sys somewhere to disable the GUI. I forget what it is at the moment, though.

You can network through DOS, though I'm not familiar with it. You'd then be restricted to wireless network cards with DOS drivers, though.

If you do this, be sure to get the 11 mbps cards instead of the 1.9 mbps or whatever. It should work, depending on distance and obstacles.

The setup you want is exactly what I have right now. Im using windows 95 but it should be the same for 98. With notepad open the file c:\msdos.sys. Now find the option called BootGUI=1, by default it shoud be set to 1. Change that to 0. Now everytime you start your computer it will start in msdos. If want to get back in windows and use the networking just type win at the command line. Email me if you have any other questions.

    Thumbs up

    That's just what I want!
The only problem is that it is a write protected file. I have to get it changed some sneeky cheep way. I suck at hacking but I'll find a way.
    Thanks

I run a large wire from my the washingmachine closet (wherre the hub is) out the garage to my car. It works, my dad drove over it, it still worked. I usually close the garage door on it too

Yea It's cool having you'r house networked. I'm 16 and we ran the cat 5 cables through our walls. I get to brag my networks better than my schools dumb old coaxal that dosn't even work if some of the computers are off!

Soon my car will be on the network too. I want to use a RF card but the pci bus lockes the keyboard up on my carputer.

Thanks for the prior advice about windows. I should have used win 95 because 98 used almost 3/4ths of a 200 meg hd. It was dule booting fine with 95 and dos on a 100 mg hd!

msdos.sys is probably hidden & read only. Like mp3pc said... make friends with the attrib command. Also... be cautious about changing the length of the file.

Also... I use TweakUI to automatically log me on to my system. I don't wanna hassle with changing the config when I wanna use the NIC.

Is there a way to keep you network card in you computer and disable is but still keep all the drivers so that 20 sec delay that comes with having a netwok card in you system goes away. I know you can go to the device manager and check the disable driver in this hardware progile.....but does that sill have the long delay.....
