    XP desktop icon question

Ok - let me see if I can explain this. You know how on previous windows operating systems your desktop icons didn't have a transparent background for the text. Well recently my home computer which is running XP has gone from having the transparent backgrounds on the text to no longer having the transparent background. Does anyone know what causes this and if there is any way to put it back to being transparent?

Did you try to reset the icons by setting them to "large" then back again to normal size, that might do it but I am not sure, worth a try though. (desktop>property>appearance>effects>check large icon>OK)

    Talking

actually go to start>settings>control panel>system and go to the advanced tab, click on settings for "performance" and in the "Visual effects" tab look for "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" or just select "adjust for best appearence" but if your computer is not fast enough it may slow down (I'm talking about older ~650mhz CPUs and below).

As to why this happened (one day being there and the next one it was gone) it could be that "let windows decide" is chosen on that same "visual effects" tab which depending on the performance of your computer maybe windows removed the setting to save a couple of CPU cycles.

It can also do that if you use an active desktop wallpaper, so make sure you're using just a normal image.

Yeah, if you installed a specific wall paper, Active Desktop will be enabled, so then bye bye transparency. If you knew about changing the visual/performance settings, then you would know if you turned off transparency in the area b_nom said.

JPG seems to be fine. There used to be one in XP that was an active desktop kind, but I can't find it anymore. I know if you drag a .html file into "My Pictures" you can use that as a wallpaper and the icon text will be non-transparent (and slow everything down).
