Red face The best operating system for mp3cars

What is the best OS for an mp3car computer?
Right now I have win98 and Ive heard that win 95 is faster in certain areas and win2000 is good in certain areas, and I have no experience with linux (programming knowledge is needed to install it)

So what really is the best or close to the best??

Dos IMHO. Windows is too much of an over kill for a sole mp3 player. Fair enough it's a different story if you want to run a GPS or incorporate DVD. For my future install i will be running Dr-DOS. with the right addons for MPXPLAY you can have a nice graphical Character bassed LCD too.

    Cool

DOS is great, but you have no native networking, it doesn't support long file names, and your stuck with 2GB partitions.

For this reason, I feel that Win95 is the best way to go.

I'd say linux if you can get it set up right...i can't get the drivers for it on my computers argg...if you know windows stick w/ it, you might be intrested in the $15 upgrade...98Lite it takes out some of the crap from either ME or 98 and speeds up everything, cut over 15 sec off my boot time (amd k6-2 500mhz, 64ram, and no tweaking) it booted in just over 1 min w/ ME, lite did a good job...

Dr-dos.. it comes with netware personal edition which lets you do the networking.. Actually if you do a windows install and then just have it boot to DOS you can use the NET command to connect to SMB shares easily...

You can also get long file name support utilities for dos.. (back to that windows install booting into dos)

Dr-dos (and the command.com from windows 98) will support fat32 partitions which are larger than 2GB..

Windows is my preference, but DOS can be quite quick if all you need is a char LCD..

windows is great winme is ok it boots up fast in like 20 seconds. Whistler win2001 sounds great thou with winamp and boots just as fast to bad its a beta.

but ppl here claim linux is great cause u dont have to shutdown linux well u can get a shutdown card for 25 dollars for windows to shutdown windows after you turn your car off so then windows becomes the best in my eyes.

http://www.dschmidt.com/ get the shudown card here.

You "should" shut down Linux just like Windows.. ever just flipped a Linux box off? Have fun waiting 5 minutes for a fsck. The only advantage in Linux is that you can make your file system read only and THEN you can just flick it off..

Too bad there is no way in windows to do this, but windows writes just too often in boot up and for everything...

As for shutting windows down properly, I don't think my car box has EVER been shut down properly and it works fine.. All that is open is Winamp.. it wont cause a problem just to shut it down..
