    Post file corruption with windows?

I disabled scandisk and now instead of shutting down my car mp3 player I would just turn off the ignition and kill the computer. But after doing this, one day windows ME refused to boot, and I ran scandisk and it found 52 lost clusters? Is this normal? Should I properly shutdown the PC or is their a solution for the file corruption?

Things get corrupted when you shut off the computer when it's writing to disk. If you set winamp as the shell, and only read mp3's from the disk, it will never write anything and never get corrupted.

Squeezer i find this hard to belive. My system is setup that way and i have had mine in the car over over 4months.... I brought it in the other day, added more songs and ran scan disk...not one problem. Now if u have other software installed and u haven't configured ur pc properly, u might have problem. And Dima, swap file should not even cause a problem.

Same here, I've had the system for a year and a half and no problems with just shutting it off with a hard switch on the 12v running to the inverter. I scan disk everytime I put MP3's on it just to make sure and have NEVER had a problem. I don't even have winamp set as shell and no problems...

The problem is Windows Me. It's crap. Seriously.

Lets be fair, things get corrupted in windows no matter what you do sometimes.

I just spent a week getting win98 back on the internet, it would dial, but no tcp/ip activity (no ping no web) I uninstalled and reinstalled all my network stuff, IE and the last few microsoft update patches.

Sure, things do get corrupted sometimes.. But in the car everything is just going to be read, there shouldn't be a lot of writing to allow for corruption. I run Windows ME and have run 95 and 98 (w/ 98lite).. and they all ran great never crashed once..

FYI: Even when software appears to be only reading (i.e. playing an MP3, etc.), there is a lot of read/write activity going on behind the scenes. One example mentioned is the Windows swap file. Windows is constantly reading from and writing to that file. Not to mention whenever the registry is modified, data is written to the physical registry file on disk as well. Lots of other software performs read/write operations in the background. How else do you think programs store settings, preferences, etc?

    Question

So what if you set the swap file to Zero? If you have enough RAM do you need a swap file?
