I have actually decided that by the time I will upgrade from win98 to win2000, and from there need a new OS, I will go to strictly an alternative OS.
Have anyone here actually seen the pictures of XP? It looks like Dummified MacOS. It is an operating system for 2 year olds. I have a copy of WinME, and that was just attrocious, it was saddening how stupid it was.

The only thing that might persuade me to go to Xp, is if my Mom upgrades her computer, and I can get a copy off of her. But I mean,
some of the Pics on the internet depict Xp as having icons the size of notecards, its like an OS for the partially blind and mentally retarded.
Maybe there might be a way to change the looks, possibly a skin, like the way skins work for Realplayer, it does the same, but looks completely different.

I dunno where you saw that stuff, but the WindowsXP machines there had NO ICONS on the desktop. as far as looking like a MacOS, don't you remember that they said the same thing about win95?

I dont like microsoft much either, but they are EVERYWHERE. hell, I'd like to drive a Propane-powered car, but I'd be hard pressed to find a fueling station. Do you get my point?

I've been running WinXP on my home machine for at least 2 months now and it is really nice. It's a good stable OS (beta) with pleny of driver support. I plugged in a new printer last night and it automaticcaly installed the drivers. (In Win98 you have to reboot for the OS to autoinstall the printer)

What I'm trying to say is that software is going to get upgraded whether we like it or not and at least the did a good job with this upgrade.

Before I start to respond to this topic I should let you know if you don't already that I am a Microsoft Employee. I am a Support Professional in the Developer Support Group.

I am not going to get into the typical Microsoft arguments. Different OS's from different vendors have there pluses and minuses. Pick the one that best meets your needs.

Cool Features of Windows XP:

1) New GUI: I orginally found the new GUI a little bit hard to deal with, however, after giving it a chance I have found that I like it more than the 9x/2000 one. If you don't like it you can use the old interface.

2) Remote Control: Using the same technology as terminal server it is now possible to give someone control of your PC to allow them to fix it. You cannot simply take control without permission! So the next time my father calls and needs help scanning a document, we can do it together and I will not have to drive 2 hours to fix it.

3) CD Burning: CD Recording is not build into the OS. You can record both data and audio CD's as well as MP3's to CD-Audio.

4) Media Player: Windows Media Player is now more integrated with the OS. When you rip your cd's to the pc it downloads the track information and JPG's of the cover art. When you view the folders in Thumbnail mode it shows you the CoverArt on the folder and up to 4 covers on the artist folder. The media player 8 format is awesome. I have started over and re-ripped all of my CD's into this format and it got the cover art.

5) Other: There are hundreds if not thoundsands of other little enhancements that are to numereous to mention.

If you have any feature questions about XP send me a piece of mail and I will try to find an answer for you. I am going to install Beta 2 on my car box tonight.

I think that once it ships you will find a ton of cool features that you want and will get an excellent value for your money.

Hey WizardPC: when you were there, were there a bunch of Linux guys out front handing out CD's?
I head Jon Maddog was there, and was helping handing out cds and magazines for a linux convention on the 3rd story, and micorsoft got mad because they were giving out free linux cds.

What I said was that in order for Win98 to Automatically find the printer (without you telling it there's a printer) you have to reboot. Then Win98 says "Found new Hardware"
WinXP instantly pops up with the "Found a printer" window right when you plug in the paralell cable. Same as when you plug a USB device in. It's instant.

Not that any of us are worried about how fast we can install printer drivers on our mp3car machines... It was just the first example I thought of to show the advances in WinXP

The whole XP system will work for Microsoft. People know the name and will follow whatever they spit out from their software development team. Im not saying this is a good or bad thing..... its just the way it is.

Microsoft wont curl up into a ball and die for quite a while yet. Yes.... Linux and alternatives will start to creep up and cut into Microsoft's market share. Linux is now VERY powerful and getting the support it deserves from the hardware/software industry.

But at the end of the day the majoriy of PC users will continue to make Bill Gates an even richer man.......

Im sure I will eventually get my system(s) on the XP bandwagon, but as the past has taught me, it wont be straight away..... be smart and let other people have the headaches of bad hardware support/etc and once just the right number of service packs have been released... get into it then!
