Post The worst sound you've ever heard...

    Hello,
Lately I've been having a problem with my player. For starters, it's a 300 mhz celeron with 48 mb ram running windows98 and winamp. Now that we've got that out of the way...
What's been happening is that the music will be playing and all of the sudden it will do something that seems like it's "fast forwarding" for a few seconds, producing the absolute worst sound you've ever heard in your life. It did this a while back for a few days until one day it just didn't stop "fast forwarding" and led to a bsod error, deleting lots of files and forcing me to format my hard drive. Now all of the sudden it's happening again. It started just a couple times and now it's getting more frequent. There doesn't appear to be any pattern as to when it happens, just pretty randomly, although never when the ar is not moving (that may just be because i use it so much more while driving... who knows).

ANY ideas what the heck could be going on here? I'm at a loss.

    TIA,
    Chris

I have a feeling it is your sound card. I use to have this cheap soundcard that did that to me.

Would it start to do that all of the sudden though? I mean, it's worked fine up until now. It still is the stock sound card too, I mean, the on board one. Maybe I should change it out. hmmmm.

Thanks for the Idea. Anything else it might be?

I'm leaning towards it being a hard drive issue considering that after it happens the hd messes up and important files get deleted. hmmmmmmmmm. maybe i need a new hd? ugh this sucks! any other takers?

    Cool

Sounds like a HD issue. If you are replacing, it's a good idea to get a laptop drive. I had similar symptoms when my HD was failing.

Car: 1986 Mazda RX-7 Turbo (highly modded), 1978 RX-7 Beater (Dead, parting out), 2001 Honda Insight

I'd bet the farm it's the HD. Soundcards are mostly digital/chips. With something as non-analog as a soundcard if something goes, it goes. With something analog like a HD, it can slowly fail, as yours sounds like it's doing. Pull the drive and try it out on your home PC for an hour or two. See what happens then.
