Media Files Synchronization
Alright, so I've been in the stages of writing file sync. software with my front end (lots of delays as I'm working full time and finishing up my degree.)
At work, however, I was setting up a clients two laptops to use Windows File Sync. Basically she had baught a new GIANT dell laptop and it was too big for her to carry around, but she liked the size of the screen and decided to buy a smaller more mobile laptop for her road trips and use the larger laptop for her "Home" computer.
We recommended that her outlook on both machines be "Global" meaning when she recieves new e-mail when she's on the road that her road machine updates her home machine with the new contact.
After some research and very easy tweaking with gpedit.msc I created a shared folder that had her outlook.psd (with archive.psd) from her home machine. I set up her away machine to "Offline browse" the shared folder. From here, if you tried to sync. the machine's the .psd file is typically not allowed to transfer... But with some research I got everything include .exe's (to transfer)
I did this work 2 weeks ago and while hammered New Year's eve, go bless beer, it hit me! Why the hell should I write custom software to transfer files across a network to sync my car machine with my home machine when I can just use the same technique I did with my clients machine, DUH !
Basically here is what you do... Create a Shared network between your car machine and home machine... make sure they both show up on your network. Now on your home machine create a Shared folder. On your car machine select the folder and right clickj to properties then click (View offline)
Now use these next directions:
go into GPedit.MSC
->Admin. Templates -> Network -> Offline Files -> Click on "Files Not Chached". From here enable this service in the text box type: *.xxx (the * has to be included beleive it or not)
Your going to have to reboot the machine, and you can change more settings in the offline files policy properties... but basically.. your shared folder on your home machine will automatically sync. with your car machine when ever your car machine connects to the home network. So you can then point your Car Front end to the Offline Shared folder, and your music will be sync.'d
So what do you guys think ? Someone else try this... nLited user's might have to re-build thier OS ( I did, because I had file sync. turned off)
