Thread: lcd software ideas

Im not sure if this has been done or not (ive looked through alot of threads and only seen it done with AlbumList for TFT screens)..

basically here is what id like to accomplish, could you guys give me some ideas as to the best way to do this?

hardware/software im using:
p200mmx
140mb sdram
8gb hard drive space (going to upgrade to 60-80gb drive for movies)
32x cdrom and/or 8x dvdrom
windows ME (id like to use 98 lite to streamline it)
hollywood+ card, soundblaster live! value
pioneer portable dvd player
keypad (i also have a wireless remote for my portable dvd player, could get a ir receiver for it..)
linksys wireless usb (this is one of the reasons im using Windows instead of linux.. i dont know if this is supported under 'nix)


im going to use a 20x4 char lcd, id like to play mp3s, and be able to output VCDs via a hollywood+ to a portable dvd player with video inputs that i have. id like to control the lcd via a keypad. when the computer starts id like to have something like this displayed on the LCD:
1. mp3 player
2. vcd player
and be able to press the corresponding # for each function

for the mp3 player id like be able to browse directories (first by band, and then by album) and have them displayed on the LCD, and then once a band and album are selected have the playlist loaded, and once the playlist is done, or when i want to, be able to push a button to take me back 1 level (to the albums for the particular band) and press again to take me back to the band selection

for the vcd player id like to create some kind of database with VB (something like an id tag for the movies) and be able to browse by movie on the lcd screen, and then when one is selected, have it automatically pass the video and audio through the hollywood plus so i can pick it up on my portable player

i have pretty limited programming experience (i took a class on VB last year) but id really like to figure this stuff out.. is this too ambitious for someone with pretty limited experience?

ive used windows for a very long time, and tried linux a few times but im not completely comfortable with it..

any suggestions / tips whatever would be greatly appreciated.. thanks!
