im guessing like the other older Creative Labs sound cards they came with a set of DOS utilities. One of the utils will be to set the mixer level.

Im guessing that when you boot up your system the mixer on the sound card is set only part the way up. You need to run a mixer util to set the volume to what you want.

I remember with my old SB16 I used to run a supplied mixer util to get the sound up.

Personally im over the DOS/MPXPLAY method, windows and winamp is much better. A little bit longer to boot (im in the sub 25second mark with my cut down OS), and winamp is hands down the best sounding player, period.
