Post Help with installing Linux Mandrake w/TFT LCD

I am installing Linux Mandrake 8 on my car computer and everything works fine with the insallation till it gets to testing X. The monitor and/or video cards do not seem to work. I have a All-in-Wonder card going to my TFT LCD. I have tried everything I can think of to get it to work but in the test I get a red screen then a red horizontal moving line. Any ideas what video settings I should use to get Mandrake to work?
    TIA

I just intalled Mandrake 8.0 last week without a hitch. It was my fisrt go at Linux, and I thought that the setup went smoother than Windows did. I know a guy at school that may be able to help you out--I'll run your post by him tomorrow. But for the time being I've heard its a good idea to be as conservative as possible with monitor resolution during setup. You can laways change it later.

Well I am only trying to get 640x480. Go figure!

I have experienced this before with other distributions. I haven't tried Mandrake 8 yet, but when I tried Mandrake 7.2 I had trouble with the install process and ended up sticking with RedHat. Try hitting Alt+F2 - Alt+F5 to see if there are any error messages. Have you tried searching the support section of the Madrake site to see if other AIW users have run into problems? The Linux community is extremely helpfull, so posting in a support forum specific to the distribution you are using is sure to you help. You mentioned that you are trying to set for 640X480, but X is picky about refresh rates and the like, so be sure to read up on the capabilities of both your video card and LCD and makes sure that you are within these specs. Is 640X480 the native resolution for your LCD? If not, try running the LCD in it's native resolution first then switch once you get it running. Best of luck!

OK, I got it to work by using an unlisted card and FBDev. I don't know if the installation was bad or something, but about half the programs I tried to run either crashed or didn't start up at all. I am seriosly thinking about diching the whole Linux idea all together and going back to windows. Perhaps I am using the wrong distro of Linux? All I want is it to boot up fast and be able to play MP3s and movies. Is there a distro best suited for this?

I second the post for RedHat. Just go for the typical install and get it up and running. I find it way easier to add and remove programs after install then before. With both Madrake and Redhat, installing programs is very easy thanks to RPM. With other distributions, it can be rough using the MAKE command, etc.
I like Linux. I have it running on my router PC, my server and my spare workstation. It's the best server OS on the market at any price. That having been said, it's not quite ready for primetime as a workstation OS. I still have Windows installed on my main PC, and while playing with the Linux box is fun it's just too much work to get it to do simple stuff.
As for the boot times, you probably won't notice a savings over Win if you're running X. Linux from the command prompt is fast, but from a graphical environment it's slow (depending on hardware). I'm also yet to find really good DVD playback software.
    Best of luck,
    Mike.

If you're looking to avoid bloatware, try one of these - http://dmoz.org/Computers/Software/O.../Floppy_Sized/

Most can be easily migrated to a hard drive and you can then add X or whatever else you wanted to.

Thanks for all the suggestions. But I have decided to go back to Windows. I am going to try Cobra III. I just don't have the time to learn Linux right now, and after trying Mandrake I will probably install Red Hat on another computer at a later date and try it out. Thanks again!
