Post New OS....looks like it may actually survive!

Just heard about this, thought I would share it with everyone, not sure if will be usable for carputers or not, but it is still good news none the less.

Very cool! Run Linux and Windows software. From the same guy that founded mp3.com.
    Also.....
LindowsOS offers a very flexible licensing policy based on the idea that software should be issued to individuals not to individual computers. This means you don’t need to buy a separate license for your home, work, or notebook computer. No registration or activation codes required.
It is also made to be installed on top of Windows so you can switch between the two.
Personally I would wait till v2 to get all the bugs out, plus v1 will not be geared for gaming.

    Red face

M$ has already filed a suit against Lindows. They say it is infringing on their copyright. Apparently, MS has trademarked *indows. Sigh...

So they change their name and life goes on! I think that is all that Microsoft can get away with. If you think about it Lindows is probably about the same as Linux and Mac, as both of them are able to emulate Windows and run Windows software (how well is yet to be determined).

Also if you would have read more in depth into the slashdot disscussions they have said it probably wont be a very good operating system. One flaw they have is that they were tossing around that it was going to be 100$ to buy it. why pay 100$ for something that only half way supports microsoft products when you can buy the unstable thing (windowsxp i might add is pretty stable). I will support lindows (without money i don't want to pay for something that is free). I think it is a good idea and good transitional os for people wanting to make that jump into linux but don't want to lose office.

Lindows isn't a new OS. It's just Linux + WINE, tweaked a much as possible toward Windows interoperability. It's based on bits and pieces of Xandros Desktop OS, formerly called Xandros Desktop Linux, which is in turn based on Corel Linux. This would all be well and good, but early p/reviews indicate that Lindows won't do much better at running Windows apps than any other Linux distro with a good WINE setup. I'm really rather surprised that you jaded mp3car folks were that taken by Lindows and their endless press releases (incidentally, Lindows was founded by the MP3.com guy, the king of press releases).

I agree. I wasn't taken by it but if the product helps people with the transition from windows to linux more power to it.

I have the pre-release of this OS. Installed it on my laptop. Its pretty kewl but has a FAR way to go. It is a tweak version of linux running wine and designed to look like windows. Its a step foward in the right direction, but has a very long way to go.
