    Post Make MPXPLAY skinnable?

    i love mpxplay, but it just looks ugly of the new tft... (i had no display before)

    i would go to winamp, but i need to know hard hard it would be to skin mpxplay first....

    dos is better 4 me since i am using a pentium... i`'ve got everything in dos.... mpegs, snes games, etc., and windows just seems like overkill for what i want.

    What are you using to play MPEG's in DOS? How are you switching between MPXPLAY and your other progs? This sounds interesting!

    to play mpegs and divx in dos, i use a cool proggie called quickview pro.... get this... my divx encodes look choppy in windows, but in dos, i get zero skipped frames.... just shows how much processor time windows wastes! it even does mp3's! anyway, heres the link

    http://www.multimediaware.com/qv/

    oh yeah... program switching... it`s all done with a keypad:
    i quit mpxplay with the full stop (i edited mpxplay.ini so that .=quit)
    i then press a number followed by enter.
    i have it setup as:
    1=mpxplay
    2=quickview pro
    3=zsnes (snes emu)
    4=genecyst (genesis emu)
    5=cthugha (looks like winamp visualisation, but smoother)
    6=rip a cd
    7=scan 4 new mp3s and update the mpxplay playlist
    >8 none yet

    its all done with batch files...
    eg. 1.bat on my system is "c:\mpx\mpxplay playlist.mxu"
    or the contents of 2.bat would be "c:\zsnes\zsnes.exe"

    if i had more time, i could make up one of those dos menu's, like the ones u see then windows ask if u want it to go into safe mode

    Mike Hunt: I was reading your setup specs in your sig, and I just need to clarify: with QuickView you are able to watch Divx smoothly in DOS? With a P-200MMX and 32MB RAM? This is impressive!
    Does anyone know if there is a GPS package available for DOS? If yes, then we could have it all - quick DOS boots, good performance on mediocre hardware and allo the best in car applications (MP3, DivX, GPS).

    mtmsol: sorry, that was a bit mis-leading... my home system is a 400mhz celeron, and the system i was referring to... when i watch divx in windows, it`s jerky, but it`s smooth in dos with quickview. i should have mentioned that

    I only have mpegs on the 200mmx, and i have yet to try divx on it, but i`m sure it would be jerky

    theres loads of dos software out there, with plenty in development... i`m pretty sure there route planner software for dos... but i think the gps wouldn`t work under dos

    maybe theres some sort of gps driver for dos?

    I thought it sounded a bit too good to be true, but you had me excited...
    My carputer is an Advantech 5862 SBC with a P-200MMX and 32MB RAM, and I'd love to be able to use DivX (Don't have the $$ for the Powerleap 400MHz upgrade). I thought of putting a DVD decoder card in the PCI slot, but there are 2 disadvantages here - this would not work with the LCD controller built into my board (I'd have to go NTSC) plus a DVD decoder card won't help with DivX.
    Do you know if QuickView would work well with a VCD on a 200MMX?

    quickview plays vcd fine in the 200mx... but i rip the cd's to harddisk in windows as dos doesn`t like my cd drive.

    if divx is jerky on your system, could always convert your divx to mpeg... the disadvantage being that the mpegs take up more hd space...

    also... i take it theres no way of skinning mpxplay then?

    Well it seems that you have gotten farther than anyone else here with a DOS setup. I think you might be the one answering OUR questions after this!
    Why not just use Quick View Pro for your mp3's? does it not support playlists?

    Also, do you have a website up yet showing how you set all this up? I'm sure there are more people than just me interested in your setup.

    I am pretty far with my dos setup, but I only have a character LCD.. aren't I helpful..

    My friend was nearly able to play VCDs on his P166 in windows, but his comp was really messed up, I think that if he reformatted and tried it in dos that it might have worked..

    But, using the dos player listed above, my AMD 1000 overclocked to 1200 can't play VCDs as well as it can through windows.. I think this program isn't that good on newer computers.. Just my thoughts..

    heh.... maybe i should change my name to dosphreak

    i`ve tried using quickview pro 4 mp3s, and it does support playlists, but it isn`t as good as mpxplay as it doesn`t have song resuming, amoungst other things.

    website:really soon, maybe next week... i`m really busy right now.

    skinnyboy... quickview probably doesn`t support your video card properly... meaning no hardware scaling.... equals jerky playback

    i will get in touch with the author's of mpxplay, and mpxf.... they should be of some help

    thanx for all the input and suggestions, btw
