DSL has a tool to make a liveusb. I'm sure you can use the same tool to make a liveCF. then just boot from it on your 1600.
The plan, once I've received all the bits and pieces in the mail, is to do a frugal install of Damn Small Linux to the Compact Flash Card and then try to boot from that in the HD bay using an adapter. The 1600 does not have a CD-ROM, and it cannot boot from USB or PCMCIA.

Yup, in fact they sell CF cards with DSL pre-installed, for use in ITX computers. The question is, will the 1600 boot, and will I be able to find drivers that are compatible with both the 1600 AND DSL. I was just wondering if anybody on these boards (such as the person who started this thread) had any experience and/or tip regarding this particular piece of hardware. In THEORY, I know how to do it, but theory only gets you so far, ya know?
my guess would be that DSL see's all your hardware and auto-loads all the drivers for them. Your hardware is old and therefor most likely has drivers already in either the Linux kernel or in userland.
You won't know for sure until you try it.
[EDIT:] this would probably best go in the Linux section. It'd get more relevant viewers there.

Good idea. I'll start a new thread there.
