Post Newbie, Please help, OS questions!

Let me start off by saying, I already searched the forums in regards to my question! Basically my question what OS is the best, iv read a stripped down version of 98se, but how does one strip it down to where it does not need to be shut down properly, If there is a way to get win to boot ever time with out probes id like to know. And how viable is DOS, I donít have a ton of experience with DOS, any advise would be greatly appreciated

PS Iím using a 2x40 LCD

    Cool

There is no "best" OS. Use whatever suites your purpose. For me, that was Win95. For others it might be Win98 or Linux. If you want to only play MP3s, DOS will more than suffice.

one way to help strip down Win98 is to go to 98lite.net and get their installer. It helps cut some of the fat out.

I put ME on my machine because it can hibernate. I adjusted the power properties so the computer will hibernate when I push the power button, and the BIOS power options to "Power On after AC loss."

This means that when I get in the truck and turn on the inverter, the PC comes on and resumes from hibernate (takes about 15 seconds). When I want to turn off the computer, I hit the power button and wait about 10 seconds for it to hibernate, then I cut the inverter.

I had XP on my machine for a week or 2, but it didnt like my USB-Serial converters, my DVD program, or the fact that I can only run 640x480, so I took it off.

What usb->serial converter are you using? I have a keyspan one and it works great with xp.

I'm running xp because it just looks better with the lcd screen (cleartype) and the remote desktop works way better than vnc ever did.

I'm also running xp with a 640X480 res. That's the highest this lcd screen goes.

I paid $20 for one made buy ATEN (i actually bought 2). They work, but not all the time.

Yes, I could run in 640x480, but I REALLY hate those little windows that popped up everytime I started the computer saying that I should change to a higher resolution.

And my DVD software will not work with XP, and I dont want to pay $50 for the upgrade.
