Lightbulb mp3 software you cant do without

Thought it might be useful to start a thread for what everyone feels is part of their "essential" list when I comes to mp3/mp3car software. Good chance to see what everyone else is using, and maybe bring some cool new programs/plug-ins/utils to the attention of the masses here at mp3car.com!

    to get the ball rolling.....

    • mp3DirectCut - great piece of freeware to allow trimming, gain adjustment (to allow fade-in/out) of mp3's very easily, without the need to de/recompress (thus no further loss in quality). As of version 1.18 a cool normalize option has been added, which is fantastic for those downloaded mp3's that were just a little too quiet. http://www.rz.uni-frankfurt.de/~pesch/
    • ID3kill - I dont like ID3 tags on my mp3 files AT ALL (hey, its just how I was raised!) using just the filename instead (god bless windows LFN's!) so this utilty is a godsend. Removes both ID3v1 & ID3v2 tags from whole directories of mp3's in one swoop. http://www.headstrong.de/
    • Sqrsoft Advanced Crossfading v1.72 - A few ppl I know use this plug-in with winamp already. Allows for the cross-fading of mp3 files during playback, with heaps of options to give anything from niteclub style dance mixes through to gapless playback for your Pink Floyd Albums! A must have. The website http://sqrsoft.audiogalaxy.com has been outa action for a bit, but try searching for it on winamp.com you should be able to get a copy.
    • LAME MP3 Encoder (latest build 3.91) - If everyone used LAME as their mp3 encoder I reckon the world would be a better place! Gives great quality mp3's all the time, and much better than some of that Xing encoder rubbish, etc. Just get it! http://home.pi.be/~mk442837/
    • Razorlame - The frontend I use for LAME. Interfaces to the lame.exe file, covers all the lame options/switches in a nice win32 GUI. Can also shut down your PC after encoding, etc. http://www.dors.de/razorlame/

and there you go! sorry to sound like a late-nite info-mercial for the latest "abb-master" product or "mega memory" product, but these are the programs I can't do without to make it through that jungle that is mp3!

    enjoy!

In searching the MP3Car forums I've never seen this Winamp plug-in come up, and searching the web or usenet brings up a lot of pages in spanish (what does ao mean?).

Great for use with my touchscreen, I'd been using Sonique mostly 'til I found this. Hopefully Winamp 3 will eliminate the need for this, with it's free-form skinning.

i would also add the Winamp visual plugin called Geiss. Its the coolest plugin ive seen for Winamp, and if you have an IrMan, you can set it so that 1 button pops it up when playing mp3s in Winamp. It moves to the music.

I would also add TweakUI which lets you customize Windows in various ways, easily.

    Cool

I only use a few applications:

    • Windows Media Player - Comes with Windows, easily automated through it's COM object in VB, Plays almost eveything.
    • CD-COPY - Good MP3 ripper with built in CDDB, free for non commercial use
    • MP3 Player Ver. 2 - My custom player software that runs my MP3 car setup.
    • Morpheus - File/MP3 swapping utility.

Software Suspend patch for Linux -- you could call it Suspend to Disk or Hibernate, if you prefer -- unusually slow POST times and excessive amounts of RAM notwithstanding, it'll easily give you a boot time of less than ten seconds.
