    Auto Shutdown Software

Is there any software out there that allows you to shut down the computer by applying a signal to a port. eg, applying a high to a certain pin of a paralel port causes the computer to shut down. I am aware that the IRman plugin can shut it down by pressing a button on the remote but I want to build something automatic and I know nothing about programming.

I don't know of any software already available. However, if you could find a programmer that knows how to control/poll the parallel port it would be quite easy to get this to work. Doing this in 98/95 should be a peice of cake...

I would like to help you but I'm afraid that I just don't have enough time to spend on it.

Is IRman just not a solution for you? What kind of software are you running to control WinAmp and etc...?

I use IRman to control the mp3 player, the problem is me forgetting to turn the thing off. My car sits in a garage for days at a time and last Saturday I had a flat battery caused from leaving my mp3 player running. My plan was to make a timer that would leave it running for an hour or so, then shut it down. I can make a timer to turn it off, this is my field, however programing is not. I saw a site a year or so ago where somone did a similar thing using UPS 'powerchute' software but I have been unable to get hold of it.

There really isn't a good way to do a shutdown with software only. You would need some hardware work as well. The computer needs to know the state of your ignition key to know if you left the computer on. I'm working on a power control circut right now for my Linux box. You might check out one another guy made and see if it will fit your needs.

Look under Products --> Shutdown Unit

    Hope this helps...
