    .

I looked into this briefly but as I was searching I began to remmeber all the random crashes and multiple restarts I had to do with win98 machines, I think that its just to unstable to put in the car envirnment...

This is just my opinion however, I am curious how small you can go with win98 I would imagine considerably smaller than XP (which on average is about 340-400MB) I think that looking into windows 2k is something to consider...

I know there is some sort of win98 le software out there that strips it down for you. It costs money though.

The truth is, you can only get it so small. There are certain dependancies and apps that have to be installed, even if you don't need them. Otherwise the OS will complain. It is a shame one cannot simply run "make menuconfig" and adjust the Window's kernel...

98lite from litepc.com will strip down 98. It has a trial version. The only difference between the trial and full is being the trial you have to do a clean install to strip out the junk.

Here's an interesting site I found. 98 in 5MB. Obviously this isn't going to run a lot of applications since a lot of needed files will be gone, but it'll at least give you an idea of what can be removed.

And last but not least.... This site details how to get 98 to run from a cdrom, it can be easily adapted for a CF Card. The tutorial shows how to get the registry running in a small ram drive to reduce writes to the CF. Only disadvantage is you'll have to make a working image on a hard drive and copy it to the CF. So any updates made will have to be re-copy to the CF.

nLite supports 98? Their webpage says only 2000/XP/2003.
