Can't you just create a Win31 frontend for a DOS mp3 player like DAMP or MPXPLAY? MSs media player would never come into the picture.

I downloaded some multimedia libraries a while back for VB6 that include a mp3 decoder, spectrum analyzers, and a bunch of other crap. I don't think it uses ActiveX, but then again, I could be wrong.

Of course. But then you could skip the whole Win32 thing and just use 16 bit VB...Originally posted by Gutter:

I found some mp3 players for 3.11 at download.com if that helps anyone.
I know this thread is old as hell but I have found some great stuff for using a old system running win3.11.
You can't make a FAT32 partition and stick win3.1 on it. Theres a special driver that lets you use a FAT32 file system with win3.1 but it's buggy.
Theres a MP3 player for win3.1 called WinPlay It works quite well but you need a Pentium and at lest 32MB of ram.
For video theres a program called XING that lets use play MPEG but you need atlest 64MB of ram and a CPU at 120+ MHz.
The 32bit API "WIN32" is buggy and only lets you use a handful of software.
VB 4 and I think 5 are compatible on win3.1 but you can't do much, just make it easier to access stuff. Might work well for building a front end but it would have to relay on other software.
The reason why I brought this up is because im playing with a old IBM thinkpad that i'm thinking to use as a carputer in my beater. At the moment my main car is down for major repairs and like hell im going to take out my current system and toss it in a saturn that is falling apart.
To live is to let die.
I can not believe anyone is even trying this. Does anyone remember how much of a pain in the *** windows 3.1 was. Instable as hell, setting up an internet connection is ten times as difficult as in XP, and just forget about networking. Also good luck finding an MP3 player that works for, you may find one but if it works is another story.
Fell free to try, but really lets get realistic it aint gonna work..

Visual Basic 4 can compile 16 bit applicaion for Windows 3.1 or 3.11. There is Windows Media Player (but I think don't play mp3) and Internet Explorer 5 for Windows 3.1. The ploblem is that dos run on pc with 33Mhz or 66Mhz system bus (crash on 100Mhz pentium 2/3). Dos don't have USB support and multitasking is cooperative
