Win2k quick shutdown options?

I was hoping maybe someone with the programming know how might be able to help me out on this one.

I was wondering if it's at all possible to create some kind of batch file that will quickly shutdown and/or hibernate a win2k box. I've tried creating macros for this, but the only problem is, that all programs are cut off when you hit the shutdown option screen, so the macro recording doesn't pick it up. I've also tried manually putting in the macro commands, but that doesn't work either.

There has to be some kind of windows system file that you could shutdown/hibernate/restart depending on the switches. If anyone knows, your help would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, but I have not been able to find any command line utilites to use in a .bat-file to fix this.

I thank you very very much for this link. I'm starting to play around with program now and the only draw back is that there is no kind of hotkey support or any other shortcut, but I just might be able to pull something off by making a quick macro or something. Would be great if someone could figure out how this program is making the computer go into hibernation without accessing the shutdown option window, then we would all know how to do it, oh well.

<edit> ah crud, it looks like I was too quick to judge on the program. I thought that by click the big red button it would automatically do the hibernation/shutdown/reboot, but instead all it does is set the alarm. This means that you still have to set the time like a few seconds ahead everytime the program is set and then click the activate button. Oh well, at least it's a step forward in figuring this problem out. BTW, Marcus, you're still my hero of the week. Although I can't say it's worth all that much, heheh.

Well, I've been doing more tests now that I'm running windows ME on my carcomputer (instead of tests on windows 2000 pro on my home computer) and it seems that c:\windows\rundll32 user,exit windows infact shutdown windows. I've been trying different extensions and what not, but haven't found anything for restart or hibernation. If anyone has more to add to this, that would be great.

Well, I tried a workaround like that on my Windows Me box too, but didn't get it working.

Even though I used:

rundll32.exe shell32.dll,SHExitWindowsEx n

where n is for Windows 98; one or a combination of, the following numbers:
- 0 - LOGOFF
- 1 - SHUTDOWN
- 2 - REBOOT
- 4 - FORCE
- 8 - POWEROFF
The above options can be combined into one value to achieve different results.
For example, to restart Windows forcefully, without querying any running
programs, use the following command line:

rundll32.exe shell32.dll,SHExitWindowsEx 6

I tried with n = 16, 32, 64 and 128 but with no change. All it did was use the 0 as default to logout.
So I guess there is no such support in that command for WinME.

Anyway, after some digging in I've come up with that you can use the "SetSuspendState" API to get it working. But you will have to do some coding then. All info need is in the MSDN.


I've unfortunately not been able to come up with any better solution but I won't give up.
I'll send a mail to our discussion aliases and see if someone got a hint.

Alright, I have some really good news for windows ME users. I have a friend working on programming a simple program that will do all the shutdown functions (including hibernation, as soon as he figures it out). It should be a simple program that will do various shutdown options according to the switch.

If anyone has any comments / suggestions/ help / ideas , please post em here.

where can i donwload WINDOW ME ?

can Win2000 shut down/hibernate with the power button like ME does? A soft off option like that would be joy! At the momment I'm running ME, because i can just press the power button (on ATX) to properly shut down the puter or hibernate. I would rather use 2000, but as far as I can see it doesn't support the power button?
