    Question Anyone succesfully networked

    I'm about to order my networking stuff, but I want to make sure I have this right. My MP3 player has a built in 3com card RJ45.
    I was told all I need is another RJ45 card for my home computer(any brand), and a crossover cable. If I use windows will it automatically recognize the other computer, do I need special software? What about dos.

    Windows will let you see the other computer if you have installed your netcard correctly.

    dont forget to install the file and printersharing otherwise it wont work

    For dos you will need special software

    I don't know if there is any non commercial software avail. but otherwise there is fastlynx and my favourite the old Novell Light (VERY OLD). Both of these are commercial.

    If you are new to networking i must recommend using windows, simply because it handles alot of the network setup automatically.

    I am ofcourse fully networked, if you can plug in a cable you can do it I have stopped using my network to transfer mp3's I just use Hard drive racks now though.

    where is a good place online to get hard drive racks. Only one ive seen was through ebay and guy wanted too much in my opinion. I havent really scoured the net for it, but I am intrigued by the idea. ANy info you can give me I would really appreciate. Thanks,

    I got mine from http://www.mwave.com cause I've had excellent dealings with them in the past. I paid 40 bucks to 2 with shipping but it was well worth the price. You also might try http://www.tigerdirect.com

    I have a paif of 3.5" HD removable racks with bay etc that I don't need anymore. I'll let the pair go for $10 plus shipping if anyone wants em.

    Forgive my ignorance, but what exactly is a hard drive rack? Does it just make your hard drive portable? Can you put a hard drive in when the computer is on?

    You can but your computer will probally just lock up. You can't hotswap HDs unless your computer supports it and no personal ones do. Unless your running a dual processer server config but that's another story.

    If you want to network DOS machines with windows (NetBEUI, TCP/IP) You will need to get MS Client 3.0. It comes on the NT4 Server CD I believe.
