Post Which Flavour of Windows is most suitable...

In your opinion, which flavour of windows, 95, 98 or ME is the best in terms of...

    1) Speed to boot up
    2) Stability
    3) Resource intensive (Running off 32mb ram)

    Thanks!

PS This is for use in a MP3 Deck Player...decided to run windows off it.

Personally I thing WinME is junk. I have win98SE, WinME and Win2K on the same system (multible boot). WinME crashed on install twice, doesn't recognize my hardware as well as 2K, etc.

I would stay with win98 or you can play with win2k but not all software will work.

How about win95? It's less resource intensive right? I only have 32mbs of RAM running of a K6 300

windowsME all the way. I don't have any hardware problems with it and my computer boots up in 20 seconds which starts right where I left out in the song that's playing. It depends on a lot of factors in my opinion and yes, the hardware you own is a big factor.

I would go as far back as Win3.1 if it does what you need! The thinner the OS the faster/cleaner it runs!

Actually my honest answer would be Win95. What applications do you need WinME to run because you can't run them on Win95?

one word, hibernation. For those that can pull it off, it's beautiful for bootup.

I don't know about hibernation....would it suck the battery flat....car might not be able to start the next day....maybe hibernation would be good if you know you are leaving yoru car for an hour or so....

I know WinME boots up pretty fast....but it does sucks resources...but the hibernation feature is really cool.....decisions...decisions...DEcisions...

how do you go about setting up a computer to go into hibernation mode? i'm running ME (my computer speed benchmarks slighly faster w/ ME than 98 (running 700mhz athlon) but anyway if you can help w/ the hibernation i'd be greatful...also for keeping the batery from dieing you could hook up a med sized solar panel to the batery to charge it...or have a small one in the trunk charging w/ the panel.

Hibernation is when all the contents of the RAM are dumped to the hard disk.. and then reloaded on reboot.. the computer is completely off.. its not standby mode so no power is being used..

Search for a file called nohib and see if it exists. If it exists then there is some piece of hardware that needs to have a driver update for windowsme (if available). To enable it, if you over looked the tab for hibernation is in the power option settings (display properties/screen savers/power/hibernation then click enable).
