    Programming info?

    Ok, so I sit here for hours on end scanning the forums, waiting for new software to be released. I have a bunch of free time due to my work schedule, I get 4 days off everry 5 days. But I have come to the point where I feel I should be contributing more to the group. I am trying to find a place to get started in programming. I have a good background in computers and electronics, one of the good things I have picked up from being in the military. From what I have seen on the board the majority seem to be using VB, and I was wondering if any one knew a good place to learn how to program in it. I have googled it a little but come up with links to sites that assume you know what you are doing. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

    What I do when learning a new language, or language related is I go to Amazon and check out which books are the highest ranked for that subject. Books are a great place to get started with. Read one good book on the subject and then from there you can pick up the rest from looking up specific topics online. If you are going to go with VB, I'd suggest using VB.NET

    I was hopping you would chime in Frodo, don't suppose you could recommend a good, book or web site to start on?

    I've read two books from O'Reilly that were really great: Learning C# and Programming C#. They kind of work as a series. From those two books you can split off to more specific subjects like: Programming C# for Windows, and another on ASP.NET. www.functionx.com is a great web site for learning the basics on creating forms. Using google with a site specific search on msdn.microsoft.com is a great resource for any .NET language.

    EDIT: Oh, and O'Reilly books are highly rated books.

    Thanks guys, I am really interested in this. As with some of the people on this site, I have way more free time than money. And while entertaining, I figured I could do a lot more with my time than reading 12 page threads on avatars.

    Just because I only coded "Hello World!" doesn't mean I'm not proficient !!!

    I have decided on C++
    So after an hour and 2 different downloads I finally have
    "Hello World"
    First I tried Visual C++ toolkit 2003 - looked at that like a monkey doing a math problem. No offence to monkeys of course.
    Then went with CGWIN and actually made some progress..
    I found a C++ tutorial on About.com (I love that site).
    So I think I am on the right track, but any further input from the grammers will always be welcome. Thanks.
