doubt it... becuase the core of the D3 code is not anywhere near as accurate in terms of directions and such. not to mention the maps look like crap compared to that of OEM GPS systems

MM or Freedrive can be made to look like an OEM system (particular FD since it is more skinnable), but the maine issue which cannot be changed is how the MAPS look....

so you can ahve large buttons, etc, poi navigation etc OSK, touch friendly et al, but the maps and their views cant be changed!

That's funny because the maps are bought from the same company that supply's many OEM's!

Im still working on improving the look and feel of FreeDrive.. its getting there now, the next release will bring it upto a decent standard hopefully with worldwide compatablity, speedcam integration. Then it will be onto live tracking and I want to integrate a speedcam learning function, this will, with help make it intellegent to which way the speedcams are facing. I will need everyones help with this. You can already skin FD to look anyway you want, everything is changable and you can even use the sdk in it to display any information on any screen on roadrunner. I also want to do a freedrive flash file, this box/rectangle could be just put on any skin and it would display loads of stuff, speed, directions, eta/etr etc.. even change the font colour of this via a simple txt file. Anyway.. not much else to say.. just taking a break :-)

That is ACE!!! the flash thing for any skin would be really amazing... I suggest transarent bkg like your skin! This would add to the OEM feel of integrating some frontend with FD...

    Congrats!

ignorance must be bliss. I love my system.. mainly because I Know how it was built.. and can fix it.. and it's mine... I find great pride in making something.

But I guess if we had millions behind us in R&D we could make some sweet stuff!

First, we are the cheapest bastards on the planet. Assuming that the OEM Navi setup is about $2,000, and approximately 30% of that is pure profit. So, the cost of the hardware and software is about 1,400.00 bucks. We all know that the hardware isn't all that expensive, but lets for arguments sake say it is $700.00 bucks. I think that is a little much, but it is OEM, so ostensibly, it is good stuff. That leaves a cost of approximately 700.00 for the software. That is with out making a profit. Even if my numbers are off, you can see that the SW will cost significantly more then the typical 100 dollars we pay for IG and the rest. Also, the OEM's get to match the SW perfectly to the hardware. This is something that an aftermarket company can;t do as well, because there are soooo many different setups in use in the carpc coommunity.

Even if the new SW worked just like we wanted (and mind you, with so many different people, there is no way it would fit EVERYONES need) it will be too expensive, especially since I think the market is smaller then the OEM market. Think about it, Toyota/Lexus sells allot of cars. Sure, not all with GPS, but at least the potential market is there.

I think the best bet is to be able to integrate using an SDK. There are plenty of people on this board with the skill and know how to do exactly what we want/need. However, proving my point above, Few people here are willing to put up the cash to make it happen. SDK's are expensive. Programing takes LOTS of time. And we are cheap, and unwilling to pay for the programing and the SW.

    That's my take.

    Michael

Seems like worst case scenario, I would assume 30% profit on the manufacturer's part alone, dial in all the intermediaries and the fact that if they did not charge such ridiculous money, they could make more for cheaper... my calculation came to be around $600-700 for a decent system with reasonable profit along the way to the vulture middle-men.
I have found you an argument; I am not obliged to find you an understanding.

Unless you travel in Canada. I bought it along with the Canada maps for $50 more. It is very sparse for Canada converage even though they say that it includes Canada. I sent it back as it was not worth the frustration if I can not use it where I want.

I do agree on the nice interface although it can't be embedded. It would be nice if is had an SDK because I think it has great potential but then again MapPoint has MUCH more coverage. The interface is rough to use when in car because of the poor SDK from what I read but at least it has the Canada places I'm interested in. That's all I wanted was US and Canada and MapPoint kicks all the other packages I've tried so far.
