hum yeah seams very mixed, i was thinking people would just say, "this one is great, we all use it" kinda comment, guess not.
i really only want simple options i.e:
    MP3s (music)
    Video (avi etc)
    GPS
Radio (if the utility is good enough)
    equaliser

not sure i can think of anything else?

The thing is, not everyone is the same. RoyN said NMC was the best. I didn't like it. Alot of people like CF, but BugByte doesn't. Just download them all and play with them yourself. (Psst... they're FREE!)

If you want US to make the decision for YOU then get FrodoPlayer. I think that one is the easiest and will accomplish what you want.

Simply hit the FWD button in the top left corner to cycle through modes.
Artist > Album > Genre > Directory > All Music > Video. Unlike some other modes, Video does not appear to be able to be turned off.

That's an easy one. Click Menu > Settings1 > Full Screen and uncheck 'Status Bar Always Visibile', 'Slider Always Visible', and 'Menu Always Visible'.

FYI: Most people use either FP, CF, or RR. I like CF the best for it's looks, but the other two are probably a little more advanced if you want a ton of features (for now that is, CF 1.3 should be out soon which should be a lot better, and when 2.0 is released it should have most if not all of the features the other 2 have).

Well, although the current version available for download isnt a decent one (I am the first to assume that), I have been given access to betas as well as upcoming features.

What I think it ahead of others:
    - New versions runs surprisingly quickly and snappy. Has builtin video/audio player without requirement for winamp/wmp - this makes it much qucker.
    - EQ, etc is all built in to the above, so again quick and no external dependency.
    - Music organization is directory based, so you can just play a directory, you can also create playlists that contain an entire direcotry, subdirectory, or indepndent files.
    - Video and Music follow the same organization standard (directory or playlists).
    - External apps now support SDK for sending/getting data, supports multiple instances of a single app and scrolling through these, supports minimizing apps and such as anyone would expect.
    - Unique scripting which allows you to add functions in the form of a scripting language. based on vbscript your scripts can be run on button presses, on timers, on frontend start or finish. you can also add SDKs from other tools like phidgets for example and add control for phidgets with a "plugin"...
    - There are, of course, many more features, but these are really noteworthy...

I am not ranting about NMC, but I am eagerly waiting for the next releases... They will have even more functionality! Bugs are currently being ironed out and performance is number one priority.

I've been also very impressed by the way NMC is built. It seems to have a lot of potential. The way you can skin (any button of any funtion can be on any screen, you add as many menu's as you want) is really amazing!

It seems it's the most flexible for the tech-savvy, but the current version has bugs, that's true.

CF looks promising but it's slow in it's 1.2 incarnation.

FP Is a nice one, with it's own way of doing things...

MMC Is FAST, but awaits functionality.

I'm really waiting for newer versions of a lot of front-ends, also for commercial usage!

    Good luck on your quest
