I downloaded something like CCCP htt://www.cccp-project.net/ then in minicam select I think ffdshow encoder or something. Hopefully should have XviD by default but you may have to go into the CCCP settings to make sure its selected.

I was trying to use DivX, but my processor usage was almost 100%. Then I have choose mpeg2 and processor usage falling down to 80%, this is much better to me, but maybe I could try something else. In our house we have camera system with IP cams which using mjpeg. Some other tips guys?

Depends what CPU you have, if its an older especially none dual core CPU you will have little hope of real time encoding.

Even my 2Ghz Core Duo laptop struggles.

I've been using the capture! program on a pentium 4 PC with only a gig of ram with fine results with the divx encoder for years. The divx codec is not fully compatible with all systems which is why you may be seeing such high processor usage. I know on one mobo I have used in the past it would not even install divx due to hardware incompatibility.
current system: car2pc adapter playing aux in for a sansa fuze media player. simple. cheap. effective.

I am using AMD Athlon LE-1620@2,4 GHz. Could you tell me more about Capture? It's hard to find something with this name on the Internet, or give some advice how to lower processor usage?

Gday, am thinking about using an old laptop with a serial port (for GPS) and minicam for an in car video project.

I have the laptop and a serial GPS, just wondering whether a USB webcam would be suitable please?

Would like it to work at night as well so would it need infrared led's as well?

Would appreciate webcam model recommendations please.

    Thanks, Grant.

It will work fine, but you need a good quality web cam that is good at low light conditions. Infared LED's won't do squat it will only pickup what is in your headlights.

I'm still thinking about lowering CPU load. Could somebody tell me if minicam would work with IP camera?

I don't think it will (although I'll stand corrected) as it takes the local PC's video source.
