are you looking at the same product I am? a gumstix with a 400mhz XScale with bluetooth is only $184 and you can get lots of expansion boards. or you can get a "complete" system with Bluetooth and an MMC slot for $204.

but more importantly is the fact that you can modify the hardware and software without having to worry about screwing up a PDA.

well my PocketPC is 400mhz and it does fine with Destinator and MP3's and most video, even Divx.
I can connect to internet and browse etc ...

Why can't these run CE ( other than the one unit listed above) ??
Is it a MS issue ???

seems like these would be ideal, and alot cheaper than buying a PPC and hacking it up.

in order to run CE you need a boot loader and a BSP (board support package, basically a configuration for the device). the WE-DIG folks are working on that and they've gotten pretty far already. once they're done they'll release both items, but of course the issue is still the licensing for WinCE tools and OS...You could always just use the trial and redeploy your image whenever it expires.

Wow, I knew about gumstix but I didnt know someone had rigged an LCD to one of the breakboards, I am very impressed. Theyre supposed to be more of a controller device for various headless applications. Nice to see some hackers still plugging away at innovation. But my Nintendo DS runs Linux, so Im still ahead of them lol.

I started a thread asking about this very thing the other day. These things already run Linux, but most small flavors of nix dont have decent GUIs if it has one at all. Personally I like teh idea of using Linux, mainly because it is free and MS isnt going to come sue me for my carPC. I think the only downside fo using the gumstix/LCD is that you have a reduce functionality. 400Mhz/64MB would be hard pressed to decode DVDs and encoded movies, it could do MP3s, Bluetooth cellphone access, maybe Navigation seeing PDAs already are capable of it, and probably some movies with pathetic encoding that makes them all but unwatchable, and of course display OBDII data. I think for limited functionality, and price, this would be DEF. the way to go. Not to mention everything would be able to fit right behind the LCD in the dash, 4-5 short wire runs, and your up and computing mobily. No heat because there are no moving parts (unless you use a CF Hard Drive like the ones IBM makes). Yeah, I had decided not to build my CarPC yesterday, and just install an iPod adapter along with a Motorola built in BT hands free setupl; but this has piqued my interest. Maybe just a SMALL one for basic output.
