Any software to auto tag genre?

I have all my MP3s setup with perfect ID3 tags EXCEPT for genre. Theres all sorts of messed up weird data in that field

I would like a program that will go through my MP3 files and automatically retrieve info on what genre they are and then tag them appropriately
Similar to how the album art downloaders work

    Anyone know of anything?

    Thanks in advance

    Tag&Rename v3.1.7

I practically can't live without having my MP3s tagged correctly.
    Here's my savior -- Tag&Rename v3.1.7.
While using it, you could auto rename files by genre and then easily move them about in Windows Explorer or similar.

do you have mainly complete albums or misc songs?

for the complete albums, you could select all the songs, right click, choose properties, and change the genre in the Summary tab.

I have found that "The Godfather" has the ease of Tag and Rename but really just takes it to a new level with its python scripted backend. Also check out the formus there for script samples, someone might have done this for you already.

But if not, learn python, and share!

you'll most likely end up with the same messed up data in that field. IMO genre is just a bag of crap. There are way too many genre's for music that many would consider the same thing, and it seem each app that writes tag data has a differnt description for the same thing. I have hiphop albums tagged as country western and all kinds of other weird stuff. The only way IMO to get it right is to do it yourself by hand.

Definitely try MusicBrainz. It will scan through all your MP3 files, and with some pretty clever intelligence, it will try to match each file against an ID3 database... it relies on the file's acoustic/aurial characteristics, and in my experience is about 90% reliable. Saves me a TON of time tagging MP3s, especially those that have no tag whatsoever.

I think you will be able to have it apply ONLY the Genre, and preserve your current ID3 fields...

I tested the program out and its sweet. I wish it was available 5 years ago when I really needed it (now all my files are tagged properly...except genre)

I couldnt however find an option to only do genre though
    Any idea about that?
