    Use an XBOX as carPC

Well, I've modded my XBOX and put mediacenter on it. I've tried all sorts of stuff on my EPIA, drove me crazy.. I think this is the best mediacenter I've ever seen (payed EU 50,- for the 2nd hand XBOX, EU25,- for the Microsoft remote).
It's FAST. And plays virtually anything, mp3, ogg, divx, srt, avi, cddb, mddb, wav, mov, xbox games, emulators, etc, etc, USB mouse/keyboard and LCD support (with the right modchip). Startuptime about 6secs, fully skinnable, http/ftp server for maintenance, it's a-m-a-z-i-n-g. This is how it's supposed to work.

No GPS-support (is linux tho and mediacenter allows you to run .py scripts), but otherwise my guess is this is the BEST low-cost solution for your carPC project by far. Because it's a PC you can drive the xbox with a PC intelligent car PSU

XBMC is simply amazing. It plays media/games very, very well as you note.

However, it does not do much else very well. You can't hook up much in the way of hardware (yes, I know the ports are USB) and you can't run much in the way of software (yes, I know you can port apps to the xbox)
Even if you could get different apps to run on the xbox, there is no real OS on the device, so you'd have to make an all-in-one type solution, which means that you'd need to integrate binary executables into XMBC (like what they did with mplayer no doubt)

The other issue for me at least is power consumption....xbox's get really friggen hot.

Anyway, not to rain on your parade, XBMC does kick!

I'm sure it is possible, but even if you could XMBC would not work well with it. XBMC is meant to be used with an xbox controller or remote. Therefore there are no buttons on the screen, it does not expect a button click event on the screen. You could make your own skin and I'm sure you could get something going, but that is assuming that you can somehow get some sort of USB driver going.

I have not researched the subject much but last I knew there was not a USB interface in the XBMC python API or anything like that.

well... those of us that have beautiful dashboards and OEM navi systems in our cars... we would rather not screw around with another LCD and instead... with an xbox you can just use composite/s-video video to an aux video adapter that connects to our factory navi lcd (~$200). It's a much cleaner solution with the xbox than having to use ANOTHER lcd in the car for the touchscreen vga support. my 2 cents

PS - im actually thinking about using a modded xbox w/ 320gb HD in it for my mp3/video/dvd/gaming system in my new Acura TL

I agree 100% - the XBMC r0x0rz I have mine setup with XBMC and Bender MAME - I wish I could get a MAME emulator like that for my carputer - the way the menu works in Bender MAME is awesome IMHO. Just my 2 cents - but I agree, to be used as a 2nd device and not as a primary.
