Is there a front-end that can use a connected iPod?

So, since I got my iPod, I've gotten rid of the carputer. Sure, I lost customization, wifi, et al, but I gained one thing - simplicity.

Being the gemini that I am, I'm always looking for change and want to go back to a simpler carputer solution. I replaced the original carputer with an iPod, panasonic 7" motorized touch-screen head unit and a Pioneer navigation unit.

My big issue now is this, is there a carputer frontend solution that will allow me to connect an iPod via its USB cable/dock connector and play music directly off the iPod? I'm not looking for synching, I just want a frontend that will act like many of the big-name aftermarket iPod adapters (Kenwood, Alpine, Pioneer). I currently have a capability similar to this on my Panasonic, but it's just a line-out and I control the directly from the iPod. I want something where I could plug in the ipod and the frontend will takeover and access music and id3 data off the ipod.

Why do I want this? The one feature of the carputer that I absolutely loved was the visualizations (spectrum analyzer) and I sorely miss it. Let me know people, thanks!

Just get a better deck that has integrated ipod control, like the clarion touch screen one. if you got rid of your carpc you must have had good reason. The alpine/clarion/pioneer and basically every brand has a motorized 7" touchscreen that has direct ipod control, just like you're looking for.

RoadRUnner supports iPods and I believe Centrafuse will in 2.0 final (though I'm not 100% sure on the validity of that last one).

Thanks for the suggestion. My Panasonic was at the perfect price point. I got it used for $650 shipped off ebay. It's VERY impressive and amazingly works well with my Pioneer nav unit.

The problem with the Clarion is that it costs $100 more used on ebay, does not have an integrated tv tuner (which costs $200) and only has one video input (would cost $100 to get an a/v switcher with remote). The other brand units suck. The lowest price Pioneer unit can't even hold a match to my Panasonic and my unit still costs less. Same with Kenwood and Alpine.

I got a 7" motorized touch screen. integrated SD slot, character LCD, integrated DVD player, integrated TV tuner and dual a/v inputs all for $650. You can't beat that. Of course there are tradeoffs, one being no iPod compatibility and no XM/Sirius compatibility (this really sucks).

As soon as I posted this, I wanted to catch up with RR development and I just read that it supports the iPod. I just need to see how it looks. Thanks!

Mobile Impact also supports iTunes/iPod format files. You can use it to browse the ipod directories and play the songs directly from it. It cant read playlists or ID3 information however.
