etrex, GPS
I have just experimentet with the etrex vista, and it seems to be able to handle almost all types of mapsoftware( it allows you to select which type of output you whish.
Check documentation to see if it is nmea compatible, if it is it will work with programs like mappoint 2002, route 66 etc. Some programs utilize a special protocol (they typically include the gps reciever), and will probertbly not work with the etrex legend

I have an etrex legend, and I have used it with Mappoint 2002, and microsoft streets and trips. Mappoint was given to me, and steets and trips was "borrowed" from a friend. They both worked fine. The refresh was a little slow since you have to change the GPS to send a different protocol. I think it refreshed about once every couple of seconds. If I was going to purchase the software I would go with streets and trips since mappoint is the same thing with just a buch of unneeded business datamodeling crap. I would be willing to bet that the Garmin software would update pretty fast since it has it's own protocol. I wonder how copyable it is too.

with regards to the "refresh rate" of the gps software, i know that there is some addons to the mappoint software, and proberbly streets'n trips too.
I know of one plugin thats called agps and its for mappoint 2002, can't remember the www for it but do a search for mappoint and agps and you should be able to locate it

my Etrex will output Garmin, Garmin DGPS, nema in/nema out, text out, rtcm in, rtcm in/nema out, and rtcm in/text out. The website says it will work with ANY fully nema compatible GPS device. So the etrex should work. But I am a little worried about this refresh rate. I need it to be pretty quick, like if I turn down a street, and there is another turn within a few seconds. If it is that slow, i might miss the turn. Ill have to do some research on this. Thanks for the tips!

The default refresh rate for MS Streets and Trips 2001 was 15 seconds! There's a patch/hack floating around the internet that lets you drop it down to 2 seconds though... Not sure what the 2002 version defaults to though.

I got my Legend out and played around with it again this weekend, along with the AGPS software that was mentioned.
The AGPS software changed the refresh rate down to about 2 seconds. The Shareware version of the AGPS addin only runs for 10 mins. It had a pretty cool feature that gave you turn by turn directions though.
Hey Adam, How low does your Legend go down to as far as acuarcy? I had a legend last year that I could get down to 6 feet in acuarcy. This new one that I have has only went down to 12 feet so far. I also noticed that Garmin has a newer update out too. Mine was at 2.29 and the newest is 2.36, so I am hopeful that this update might bring the acuarcy down some more.

Most accurate I've gotten was about 15 feet. Im using software version 2.36 which came on the unit. I have not yet fooled with the WAAS but maybe that will make it more accurate.
