    Question Question about DIVX

    Sup guys and gals,
Ok my question is what are the minimum system requirements for Divx? As in minimum processor speed and minimum memory. I am having trouble watching it on my laptop w/ 450 mhz amd k6/2 and 160mb of ram. Just wondering what are the bare minimums.
    Any help would be appreciated.

FWIW, it works fine on my 400MHz K6/2.

it all boils down to ur video card and wether or not u have some sort of 3d chip. The AMD k6-2's are not geared toward movie stuff but can provided ur video card is equiped with certain 3d chips.

FYI---the 550mhz machine had a 3dfx Voodoo3 3000 and the 533mhz machine has built in crappy AGP graphics. So your theory is not entirely true.

I've watched Divx encoded simpsons episodes on my 233mhz Laptop with 2 megs of Video Ram. It did have 96 megs of Ram though.

i dont think 3D chipsets would have a bearing on DivX at all. Granted most 3D cards like Nvida's Geforce2/3/4's all have good 2D rendering speeds anyway and that could be the connection. The faster your CPU can changed the pixels on your screen the better the playback will be video card wise!

The minumun that I have ever seen a DIVX movie played on (this was done by me) was a P200MMX overclocked to 225mhz with 16megs of ram and a 2meg graphics card..
The player I used was a dos one called QuickView, but I actually ran it through windows 95 (in dos mode) to make use of virtual memory..

I believe this to be the lowest system it will rn on, any advances??

3D chips have nothing to do with DivX. My AMD 400 uses a Matrox Millennium video card. No 3D there.

I have not been able to make DivX work on my P90 laptop at more than 1 frame a minute, and my spare P120 machine was about the same. I would assume that MMX CPUs are absolutely required due to the large amount of floating poing calculations required.

Okay, I have an update on this..
It turns out that my graphics card has some sort of 3D or hardware decoder, I don't know, but I believe that that is the only reason it works.. Not bad considering I only paid $45 for the mobo, P200MMX CPU, Cyrix 166 CPU, Case (crusty old desktop), Graphics card, and ISA (too bad) netwaor card... Did I get ripped off??
