    Pure DOS too slow

When I boot my machine in pure DOS it takes longer for it to list directory contents.

My program I wrote in Turbo Pascal (I'll have a link to it soons for people to look at) displays the contents of a folder by running "dir /ad /b" to list all the directories in a folder. In DOS through Windows it does in in milliseconds, but in pure DOS it takes about 2 seconds and a load of hard drive noise.

What is wrong? Is this normal?

Are you running any disk caching software such as smartdrv?
You might want to. It helps a lot.

Try out DrDOS. Identical to MSDOS except that it multitasks. A 1500 song playlist in MPXPlay took about 5-6 minutes to load in MSDOS 7.1, but only took a few seconds in DRDOS.

It's free for personal use and has networking built in. Kinda blows MSDOS away.

Hmmm...I never had that problem. Did it crash randomly, or when you pressed a certain key?
