This may be a dumb question

. How many computers can I install my copy of XP Professional?

you can install it on as many as you want... but eventually you will run into problems doing this because you can't activate the same key more than once... this is of couse impossible since you might have to reformat your computer later... so.... that being said: it is possible to install this copy on several computers, but at some point you will encounter activation errors doing this.

You can activate the same key 5 or 10 times with XP. Microsoft gives you the benefit of the doubt that you are just reformatting and reinstalling. Legally, you can install it on as many computers as you want, as long as only 1 copy is running at any given time, and you or the purchaser are the only people allowed to use it. Obviously, they don't prosecute people for petty things like putting it on a second computer, but if you start installing it all over your city, they'll come a-knocking.
As for the activation problems, I do not condone this but there are work-arounds out there, but they will get you in trouble. If you do a workaround, you still need to install the genuine Microsoft patch thing that disables updates if not legit.
Just buy another copy, or even an upgrade if you have 98SE

Thanx, I was hoping I could install the copy I have on my carputer. I guess I will just install my copy of Win98.

before i got my xp pro i used my xp home cd a good 50 times on 6 or 7 computers lol. Even when you get the activation issues you just call a number in india and they give you another activation code. The problem now with illegal usage is you cant download updates without validating. Though if you look around there are ways around that too

Yeah, I definately did that, and am still doing it too!

I just thought that the question was about the legality.

If you don't mind being a little shady, then just put it on your CarPC.
