I remember an article in an old MaximumPC I had that they had a how-to on it. At least 1 1/2 years ago.

I had that issue too. Unfortunately, I threw them all away. I believe the person who made that web page also wrote the article in Maximum PC and may have been their web designer or something too. I thought I read a review he wrote on an in-home MP3 player on Linux Devices as well.

Yes that is the same person that wrote the article in Maximum PC. I still have that magazine sitting here. Basically it was a 1 inch server box running Linux and driving a LCD display. It kept a mySQL database and would "learn" the types of songs a person played and build a constantly changing playlist using those songs.

If I remember correctly, he used Perl to control everything.

yep... i did all that with C4... then i realize how easily it was to corrupt MySQL and i had to pull it ALL out of C4 after i was able to crash it and trash the DB more than 4 times. It struck me that he/they never even mentioned that problem. Also did anyone play those videos...did u notice how they loaded artist/track ?

Here is my take on it as far as MySQL goes. Mysql is where the problem is. If ur db OR table is NOT corrupted in anyway shape or form, you will be fine. Now if it is corrupted, YOU WILL LOOSE some informations....has to do with cache and the way it is designed. As far as gathering information as u go along, MySQL will get the job done (thats what the whole concept of DB is about). Coding an app like route 66 or Cobra for that matter requires you to know SQL. From designing tables to what not as well as optimizing your queries. I had C4 using MYSQL when i started out. From gathering info like about the users collection and what they like listening to it worked flawlessly.... My biggest mistake was NOT testing the state of the DB in the case of a power loss.... so 4months into developing C4 and the first day i took it for a quick test in the real world, guess what happend... DB crashed once i turned off the car and started it up. I tried diff trick to recover DB which worked but since the db last update/inserts where in cache even though i told it write that those info ASAP.... were lost. and now that leaves the db in an inconsistent state...Anyway like i said, notice that the route 66 app how he existed.... what he or they failed to mention are the powerloss issues...and what happens when ur db is corrupted....
