    Having just restarted my project after yonks of not doing anything, my EPIA now refuses to output video... so I am now using an old P3 1.2 laptop, so this could be exactly what I need.

    However, upon downloading to test, it comes up with .net framework error:

    See the end of this message for details on invoking
    just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

    ************** JIT Debugging **************
    To enable just in time (JIT) debugging, the config file for this
    application or machine (machine.config) must have the
    jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
    The application must also be compiled with debugging
    enabled.

    For example:

    <configuration>
    <system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
    </configuration>

    When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
    will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the machine
    rather than being handled by this dialog.

    Hi,
    This VB app is going to be really helpfull. Could you please add an option to standby instead of hibernate and also the option to disable the restart feature.

    Thanks a tonne....

    Hi,

    If you can outline in a bit more detail what you would like to do. From what I gather you want to...

    Battery detected > Laptop enters standby

    AC detected > Laptop resumes from standby

    In this instance, would you want the laptop to load any applications when resuming from standby - or simply resume? In this case, I can make a simple fix whereby you enable the EWF option, but instead of shutting down, it will enter standby.

    Wait for the new release

    The scope is pretty much endless on all of this, I could make it turn off when the battery hits a certain level, or perform a certain action. If anyone does have any more requests, I'll be glad to try and put them in.

    Remember though, this is the first ever time I've used VB - so my coding is horrific and it is nowhere near optimised, but I'm glad I've got this far.

    Is there any reason for the error I am getting at the top?

    Are you trying to load the app from c:\Test\ShutControl...or are you letting the installer put the files in the correct place? If the app is loading from C:\Test\ShutControl - in versions previous to 1.2 it will still run as long as the Config folder is present in the same directory.

    That kind of error derives from the application using a variable, when it is not set. Which sounds like you don't have the config folder present. Download the latest version (1.3B) and execute it, and let it install to its default directory (it does have an uninstaller, so its ok).

    It looks like you have Framework 1.1 installed, try upgrading to 2.0 (see first post error section).

    Sorry... I missed the install program and was trying to extract and execute the app directly. (You said in your first post just download, extract and run and the prog will install itself - didn't realise all I had was one of the updates!). Got it now though. Cheers.

    ok just to review so far, please correct me if I am off base

    Purpose
    Shutdown control is a program for laptops that is a laptop battery watchdog that does the following:
    1. Automatically shutdown, suspend, or hibernate a laptop based upon user settings and the laptop battery status.
    2. If automatic hangs it will try and force the situation after a specified timeout to try and protect the car battery.
    3. Launch user specified applications before and after hibernation

    What this can't do
    Turn on the laptop when the ignition is triggered. One of the following hardware solutions must be used:
    1. Hard wiring the power button on the laptop (here)
    2. Using Wake on Lan (here)

    Needed
    To fully emulate the power controllers that the desktop motherboards use for cars the following things are still needed:
    1. Read the car battery level to prevent drained car battery, even during Standby/Sleep, to force laptop power off
    2. Delayed remote control for audio amplifiers, to prevent the thump
    3. control power to other laptop accessories (for laptops with external powered drives etc)
