Thread: (M)ANY *nix mp3-car users out there ?

I was considering a Linux version of my software, but came to the conclusion that it would be too much work. I use a Flash frontend which would be mildly easy to move to linux, except that the only available SWF player doesn't support a lot of Flash's features.

The lack of decent GPS software in Linux is a major drawback. "GPS Drive" exists, but it's not very far along. Prehaps something should be developed which can read the map files from MapPoint or CoPilot. I was playing with MapPoint's ActiveX control earlier, and it's really slick. If I could figure out a way to read that in Linux, I'd be all over it.

The only person I know of that used Linux was ryanspc.com and he used to have a neat looking MP3 player which I'm sure I have stashed away somewhere. Now he just uses XMMS.

I agree with the lack of mapping software support ! I am on a few private mailing lists where we are working to develop a MapPoint for linux - not very promising so far ...

At present, I actually dual-boot depending on my needs ;-)

well not really. i first came here to see how i could do an mp3 sterio component out of a computer , or rather how other people do it. now , even though i am not (yet) working on an in car mp3 computer type thingy , i come here regulary. its a very interesting site. incident;ly , the only thing keeping me from installing a computer in a car is the power supply (or lack of expertise to build one) , and the fact that i think i broke my 16 x 2 lcd screen.
i am much more interested in the software side , i have come _this_ close to haveing a one floppy linux system , which plays mp3's from the hd , and can be controlled vai a web browser interface from another computer on the network. i was going to rip that part out.... anyway my needs changed (i broke my mother board and a really good deal came up but the m/b had no isa slot , so i had to use the mp3 computer for internet sharing , but it still has all my 8 gig of mp3 on it ).
anyway , the point of this post was yes. i would use linux in an mp3 car and it would be one floppy in size , it would boot of the h/d into a ramdisk. christ what a load of old socks....

aaahhh another person that have discovered what i saw few months ago... I take it the mappoint u are refering to here is that os MS Streets ActiveX GPS thing ???

I have MapPoint 2002 which came with the ocx. Have you been able to do much with the control? I'm still trying to figure out how to control it through code. The example on MS' site just has a form, the MapPoint control in the middle, and one line of code which initializes the map. Gee, thanks Microsoft...
