well personally, im not paying 60bucks for internet on the phone. Im talking about wifi. Im also not talking about it being the primary voice solution while im in the car either, but its allways nice to have options. There are plenty of times when im out and about and need to make a call and oops! my phone is dead and i dont have my charger (for example).

plus there are plenty of things that are done just for the hell of it, ya know, like putting a computer in your car

Also skype is only free till the end of the year so why would someone dev an ap for a couple month use. Seems like a waste of time.

Typically voip apps are customized for the provider in someway and there is always compatibility issues...

    my 3 cents

Also, then you will have another phone number for people to contact you at. Ya, not horrible, but just seems annoying.

Ah I'm sure there are options for that such as:

    http://www.yac.com/yacHomePage.jsp

I've used this for a while, but purely as a contact number. You get a virtual number that you can direct to any phone be it mobile or landline. I think you can also have voicemails and faxes sent to it delivered by email etc. I think you can also have a "hunt", so that it tries one number, then the next etc. Take a look at the Personal User area.

Yes, all manual, but wondering if they provide an API to allow an app to set which "phone" to send calls to. i.e. Give out the YAC number to people instead.

I think this is only a UK service, but no doubt there's something similar across the pond.

Ya it can be loaded right onto the Starcom so there's no point to even integrate the computer at all.

I don't know why people keep throwing around $60/month...

I'm paying $20/month on top of my usual cell charge to Cingular and get Unlimited internet...

While on vacations, I've used my Edge Phone (Nokia 6682) to make VOIP calls through Skype with absolutely no problem... The only thing is if a call comes in to my phone, it idsconnects the internet...

There is a solution to this problem though....

Just get a family line, and it $9.99 extra + 19.99/month for the internet...
There you go... Only $30/month and you can keep the cell phone hidden in the car...

Just don't give your 2nd cell number to anybody...

    Peace,

    Rafster

Really cool idea. I would say not vonage though, they seem to have a lot of problems. I setup a call center on a t-1 with 20 vonage lines, and they still drop calls left and right. What's weird is there are usually only 3 to 5 lines in use at any one time. We're currently looking at other solutions.

I've used skype @ home, it's great. I'll have to throw it in the car and see how it goes.

But, have you ever actually looked at the unbelievably confusing data plans that Cingular offers. Also, I believe the 20 dollar plan you speak of does not "allow" tethering, and must use the wap.cingular.com gateway, and not the isp.cingular.com gateway. I don't think the wap gateway is edge, but I might be mistaken on that. Also, it is a technical violation of your TOS to tether on a non-tethering plan, and you could get socked with useage charges. How do I know, well, I got dinged for about 120 bucks for tethering with the unlimited media net.
