All it is, is Windows XP with a few themes changes and the media center application. The media center application isn't super customizable (compared to all these skinning applications). I'm not sure which shortcuts you are referring to.
Media Center edition is pretty nice but I wouldn't pay extra for it if you already have a copy of XP. If you are getting it (legally) for free or you don't have a copy of XP then I'd probably buy it. The media center is really pretty nice.

I usually buy mediacenter it's a bit cheaper than xp pro, but exactly the same with the extras to boot, but in the car it's not to great because, like xbrady said, you can't customise it much, & it's designed more for huge screens, not tinny touchscreens... the remote functions are cool, but everything else your better off running a front end...

Windows MCE is certainly not going to make your system run any faster.

Adding software to a system almost never makes it run faster. If you want more performance, you will either have to optimize your operating system by disabling unused or unnecessary services, streamlining the boot process or upgrading hardware.
