Sensing Car Speed, Temperature, Engine Revs e.t.c

Right I've been having a think about this for a while and I've been trying to find out how to interface a series of sensors (e.g. temperature sensors and voltmeters) so as to be able to determine the car speed / fuel remaining e.t.c. But, I can't seem to find an easy way to read values from these sensors. At school we had these funny "sense and control" boxes that ran off the com ports and could accept various sensors. But, they were very expensive! Any ideas folks - I'm writing software in VB and if I ever get this all sorted it will all be open source

    Cheers

i have a parallel port device that came as a kit from an electronics company here in australia . dick smiths... cost $40 AUD can take 10 analog inputs etc etc.... i have posted about this elsewhere on this board..... try searching about it.... if you want i can scan the circuit and pm it to you ???

    Andrew,
I was thinking along the lines as well...but mine was more towards reading data out of a Haltech programmable ecu since its DOS based. I guess yours would be much better as it would be more flexible and not to mention affordable... I think the best way to get info would be to tap to the ecu. But of course that means that you would have to know which wires to tap to not to mention that there are countless ecu designs out there. But most aftermarket parts such as apexi vafc comes with instructions for most cars...

Another way is to build seperate sensors and hook 'em up to the computer... but it could get quite messy..

The next step forward would be wrenching out your speedo and rev meters and replacing them with lcds...rally car style...hehehe

while you're at it, how bout interfacing to the power windows and central locking as well?

p/s : Sorry bout the lousy english.

Thats kinda what I want to do, although I can't really tap into any of the existing sensors cause well there arn't any

Its an old (1993) diesel Vauxhall (GM) Cavallier car (actually my dads but he is giving it to me when I go to uni), and it doesn't have any kind of engine management system (AFAIK). I will do a bit of investigating, but everything is old (the spedometer is cable driven, not electronic!). I guess stuff like fuel level would be easy enough, but I originally wanted to replace the fuel gauges e.t.c. with a nice tft and have it only displaying fuel / temp stuff when there is a problem and on startup. Cheers for the info - perhaps I just need a new car...

I'm already working on the powered windows and central locking via IR. Also, I plan to buid features like the car won't start if the doors are open e.t.c. Prepare for a diesel like no other...

    haha,
well, your car aint that bad. I happen to like opels/vauxhall...there are the same right? I'm driving a proton wira here in Kuala Lumpur....its the persona in the UK....hehe.....and the build quality is horrible....hehe.....
Anyway, tell me what u have in mind and i'll see whether i can help u out with the hardware side. What i can tell u now is that for a rev reading you will need a frequency to voltage IC and then u have to send the input to the serial or parallel port....i think you have to tap wires to the distributor for the frecuency readout. Your speed would have to be a calculation of your current rev and gear......i think its somewhere along that line....not too sure... but basically just tell me the whole list of ideas u have and we can work from there.....

Im pretty sure there are more guys out there who are interested as well..and could u please tell me more about your power window and centrol locking setup?

I'm on exams at the moment, but as soon as they are over (2 weeks) I'll be back on the project. I'm off to buy a haynes manual for the car which should tell me everything I need to know about the windows and possibly the central locking. Hopefully it will be some help on anything else computery though! Cheers.

ps. yep - this car is the old style opel vectra.

This may or may not be of interest to you

I ditched the idea in the end, due to the law in the UK, but some of the posts might be of relevance to you.

And you say people actually pay money for M$ Windows?

Total re-design underway: on the whole progress is very slow as the car is taking up too much time :)
