You can easily download VB Express Edition. It'll do everything you need to do. I graduated with a BS in Computer Science and never needed something better than that.

You could also just pirate the software...

I happen to be a computer programmer (just graduated though) and I happen to think that there is nothing wrong with piracy. I find the idea of "intellectual property" to be highly immoral and lacking in the ability to be enforced.

Uh, good for you but it's still against the law, and against mp3car policy, and therfore a taboo subject

Out of curiosity, how do you expect to make any money if you can't sell anything you write? Since as a programmer anything you program is intellectual property?

let's talk again when you've worked for a few years and delivered an actual shrink wrapped product...

Well, the reason I said I was a programmer was because I think it lends more legitimacy to my argument, I'm not just someone who wants to "steal" software. Also, if I work for a company, anything I write belongs to them, so I never even get to have intellectual property in the first place. And if you think a programmer could NOT get paid in the absence of the absurd law of "intellectual property" then you lack imagination.
