    Xp embedded?

I am using windows 2000 currently but had to disable hibernation because it would hang every thrid time. Everyone tells me that w2k is known for that and XP is better. Was in the office sat and we got our msdn subscription and it has an XP embedded cd. I took it home but need the cd-key to install it. Docs say it is xp deployment tools used to cusotmize the os to embedd hardware. I was wondering if it may be usefull to strip out what I don't need to make a nice small install. I will look up the cd key tomorrow.

I have seen the sql ce, not gotten around to trying it yet. BTW the CE pda, are not pilots, they have a lot more functionality than palms.

I just took a look at the XP embedded website, and almost choked when I saw the system requirements - 500Mhz with min. 128 MB RAM (256MB recommended). Does this not seem steep for an embedded device??

    Question

Ok, now when I think "Embeded" applications I'm thinking somthing written to a CMOS or other non-volitile electrostat storage. Is that what you are talking about here?

I was considering running my OS on some sort of flash memory to decrease boot time and power use. I didn't know if it would acutally speed anything up or not though. Any ideas/suggestions on that path?

No, this type of embedded means a pc that the user does not see. Examples are the Tivo PVR running linux, information kiosks at airports and hotels, that kind of thing.

Getting an MS operating system onto flash memory would cost loads, they aint exactly small.

CMOS on a PC is not NV. It is Volitale RAM backed up a small battery. usually less than 1k since its just config settings. FLASH rom is what your thinging of for embedded systems. Used to be you did run an OS from flash on an embedded PC, but as the cost of PC's and os's decreases compared to the cost of designing your own embedded system and os, embedded systems have moved to using pc parts and os'es. Windows does not work real well from flash or read only systems (usually flash is only put in a write mode to do an upgrade). Looks like the embedded tools for xp let you strip it down to a smaller system. I know starting way back with embedded nt ms has been requested to change code to work better from flash so they may have do it this time.

Wait wait wait. I know that BIOS settings themselves are stored in volitile RAM but they way I understood it was the the BIOS is stored in CMOS which is non-volotile FLASH Ram. I guess I'm mistaken.

I guess 512mb's of FlashRAM would be a little expensive. But the question is would it decrease power consumption and boot time?
