So for me, I'm not getting very useful navigation instructions from my G4. I've tried letting it route me a few times, and it just can't comprehend highways with frontage roads. Here in Austin, nearly every highway has them, and Streetdeck enjoys routing me off the highway and onto a frontage road, to then just route me right back on the highway. It does this on 183, Loop 1, and also I-35 for no apparent reason. At first I thought it figured taking the frontage road when the highway turned was shorter and the best way, but it's also done this on straight sections too. The issue with this when dealing with traffic is that I can't always look at the unit to see if it really wants me to exit, or if it's just playing it's trick on me again.

So far, the usefulness of the system has mostly been as an on screen map. Overall I hope something is done to fix this, as buying an Infill G4 with Streetdeck was a very expensive way to learn that I might just be better off with printed google maps.

    FACT IS

    1. WE ARE ALL PAYING CUSTOMERS AND SPENT A FAIR AMOUNT (>$150) FOR A CAR PC FRONT-END (+MAPPOINT SOFTWARE +OS +++)
    2. MAIN FUNCTION OF SUCH A SOFTWARE IS NAVIGATION, NAVIGATION, NAVIGATION (PLUS MUSIC)
    3. NAVIGATION IN STREETDECK IS USELESS - ANYTHING ELSE IS A LIE

i bought the software over a year ago and till today i don't see any improvements. it is not a question of replacing a mapping engine over night but simple ignorance by the product development. i already dropped my money and i am happy with road runner and iguidance. but it is a sha people or the whole company behind streetedeck. what wonders me is that those guys get along with such an attidue. time will tell how long this success story will continue.

    SHAME ON YOU!

I sort of agree upspace, Saying navigation in SD is useless is a bit much if you ask me. I personally like SD more then RR and the others. From my exp RR seems the best all around but was much too difficult and time consuming for me to setup especially compared to SD. I guess location plays a factor but navigation in SD works "ok" for me. I wouldn't say I am extremely happy with it (a $199 tom tom works 100% better) but I have used it more then a dozen times to get me where I needed to go. If you are lost it works ok, If you sort of know where your going and you use it you realize it takes you on a long roadtrip that isn't exactly the correct route but in the end it gets you there. My complaints with navigation are..

    1) Custom POI's not working

    2) No new features added like a simple "add current location to favorite"

    3) For some reason it never tells me east/west/north/south when it comes to highways which is extremely annoying with you have to choose and your lost, many times It says "take US46 on right" and I look I can take US46 East and US 46 West and both are on the right, 9 out of 10 times I end up having to get on a uturn and go the other way.

There are many other missing options that you would have thought would have been added by now, I am not sure what the SD team is working on (we all know its not bluetooth..) but hopefully 2008 is a better year for the SD paying customer base then 2007 support wise.

If you purchased SD Lite, then you have reason to complain about cost, I suppose. You can't gripe too much about the cost of the OS, since you'd need that anyway. Dont' want to shell out for Windoze? Go linux or freeBSD. They cost nothing.

    2. MAIN FUNCTION OF SUCH A SOFTWARE IS NAVIGATION, NAVIGATION, NAVIGATION (PLUS MUSIC)
I don't think that's accurate. The primary function of a front end is to give the user easy & reasonably safe access to the functions they need int eh vehicle PC with some level of integration. That may include navigation, music, movie playback, phone functionality and other functions. There are some people who ony use their PCs for media playback.
So would the primary function of a frontend be Nav for those users?
    I don't think so...

    3. NAVIGATION IN STREETDECK IS USELESS - ANYTHING ELSE IS A LIE
It never ceases to amaze me how everyone gripes about SD navigation.
The engine is from Micro$oft MapPoint. I guarantee you that if you ran MapPoint by itself for your navigation, you would have exactly the same issues with its navigational capabilities.

You could make a case for the SD dev team making a poor choice in navigation engine, perhaps. And I'd 100% agree with you on that point.
However, you can't blame the deficiencies of the nav engine they chose on the SD dev team, as they are not responsible for those deficiencies, plain and simple.

i bought the software over a year ago and till today i don't see any improvements. it is not a question of replacing a mapping engine over night but simple ignorance by the product development.
    How do you figure?
Please explain your logic behind this.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?
