Greatwhite...I think you're missing the boat, perhaps due to a lack of knowledge about the history of streetdeck since you use RR. Unlike other software products which are usually created by large corporations and a nearly flawless off-the-shelf, users of Streetdeck have come to expect more than just bug fixes. The source of customer complaints springs from the promises coming from Streetdeck and the features it told customers the product had when really those features were still in development or coming soon. Coming soon has been several years now for many of those features.

You would be upset too if you went to streetdeck.com and saw that it supposedly features video games, bluetooth phone support (coming soon), and much more, then spent $200 on the software.

Generally, SD was made by very computer savvy individuals who were not very business savvy, coupled with being a small company taking on a large consumer base. All of the gripes and complaints spring from a long conversation over a period of years between SD and its customers.

You know, if Microsoft does get involved with this, and I'm pretty sure they will (or already are), to hell with One Voice. Integrate some of sync's features, you've got your killer voice recognition AND a working bluetooth phone! And Microsoft gets to control something other than an ipod and a cellphone.

This could be really REALLY good!

(And yes, Bill will own the market share of car computers too)

One really good reason to start offering CF? If the price of SD is about to go waaaaaaay up because of working "smart" voice recognition and integrated bluetooth "just like the new cars". (one can hope, can't one?)

Or "Streetdeck, offered exclusively by ????"
    My opinion is my own.

Microsoft also announced it is expanding its footprint in the navigation market by working for the first time with a host of manufacturers including Alpine Electronics Inc., dmedia System Co. Ltd., Goodyear, Pioneer Electronics Inc. and StreetDeck. Garmin Ltd., MSN Direct's original navigation partner, also announced that it will expand its MSN Direct-enabled product line in 2008. In addition, Avis Rent a Car System LLC announced that MSN Direct- enabled devices from Garmin will be available to its national fleet of rental cars this spring
Uh, right about what? All of those press releases are at least a month old...and mp3car.com has had products and showcars at the national electroics shows before. I'm not sure what this proves...

Actually, they are almost 2 months old, and have been ignored by people thinking SD is going to "die" and they want their money back.

What does it prove? Absolutely nothing........

Okkkkkkk, I guess I can answer. What does it prove? Carputers, with the release of Sync, are no longer a hobby, they will be a billion dollar business and companies that want to continue the "hobby" will be trampled over and left for dead. Said that a long time ago, and Microsoft, Intel, and Garmin? They don't deal in "hobbies".
    My opinion is my own.

Good product, good service, bad support:
Me and possibly a friend that was technical. Still discourage everyone else.

Good product, good service, good support:
Me, my friends, my family, anyone on the street.
Good described and full my thoughts.

But as I have speculated few times...
I'm certain we customers on the forum don't bring SD the real money. Otherwise they would take care more about us.
And it's really likely, that Intel and Microsoft invest much in this area, and as they list SD as their partner, SD should get not so small part of it.
Logical conclusion out of it is that SD is not listen to our ideas, they will and have to listen to Intel and Microsoft! and probably prepare the system for bigger plans.
This is for me also the only idea, what they have done the last year.

Seems for me we are mainly beta testers for free and something like a stepchild.

In a way this is true and in a way it isn't. In order to get someone's attention, like Microsoft, Intel, or Garmin, your product doesn't have to work. It only has to show potential and marketability. Potential can be shown at CES, but marketability? Some sales guys could claim all day long, but what speaks better than "this many users are already out there using the product and it works pretty well". Yes, we are the guinea pigs, but we are a valuable part of proving the other end of potential and marketability. CES is virtual, we are examples

Those companies have programmers. They can fix anything we throw at them. Bugs? With the kind of potential backing this has, the very next release could be bug free. However, what they didn't have and SD does, is basically a perfectly user based product. How many times have you seen "what would you like added to SD?", or "How can we make the features better" while ignoring the bugs. And our reward? We get to use it before everyone else does!

That's the name of the game. How better the handle costs? Have some major player throw tons of money at it and not have a clue what the average Joe wants, or have a small company actually use the public to build the perfect FE? Personally, I am tickled pink to have SD in it's current form and can't wait to see what's in the future!

I tried helping MP3Car by showing criticisms in areas they were lacking. By the responses I got (basically crucified), it dawned on me that they are looking at a much bigger picture than us. And quite frankly, I don't blame them. I would do exactly the same thing. Almost totally untapped market? Overadvertised with a "teaser" called Sync, and then offer the true power of the carputer for any car? I would give a lot of money to merge sync's voice recognition and bluetooth with Streetdeck. Think I am alone? Think if they stopped to fix every bug rather than work on major functions they would be in the position they are in?

And to use mappoint........genius. (By getting a license from Microsoft, they force MS to watch and monitor their progress, sales, SOFTWARE. Who cares if it actually gets you from Point A to Point B)
    My opinion is my own.

"Seems for me we are mainly beta testers for free and something like a stepchild"

replace "for free" with for a fee, and insert "bastard" before stepchild...

that sums my feeling on this. I and many others are willing to help on this forum, but we would like input and feedback from SD.

I would assume SD is going big time which is fine. Most software that starts small, does well, and gets the funding for proper support gets even better. Sync is spectacular, mygig is pretty good. Think if Ford and Chrysler had SD as the starting point, supported by the man-power Microsoft hast to offer, it would be very powerful, optimized, even easier to use, and better supported than it is now. The real question is will it be available to hobbyist's, or will it be available as an integrated solution only? Hopefully we will still be available to get this good of a program for this small of a fee. Now here come the RR guys saying "ours is free!" I like RR, but the time involved in getting it running, tweaking it, etc, is not worth it to me. I can buy 4 copies of SD for what I make by working 8 hours on a Sunday. And it comes with the GPS software, nothing else to buy. I may go back to RR if SD becomes unavailable, but I hope I don't have to.
