i have problems with speech recognition with car engine running , if i do audio tuning , it says after reading the text for a few words , that the mic is unsuitable for speech recon.

it was a 12 plantronics audio 300 mic , not usb , it is pluged into my intel little valley motherboard (no board sound) , now should i get a better sound card , or a better mic?

Turn the mic boost on and try again. If it was on, turn it off and try again (audio wizard). Open control panel, speech, configure microphone and go through that, then run audio wizard again. If all those fail, run the microsoft mic config, then test commands.

After all that, then consider a new mic. I can get a $2 radio shack mic to work, so you should be able to get that to work.
    My opinion is my own.

Read the user comments on the Andrea mic before you do...it's no panacea from my understanding.

i found out the name of the mic i use: $9.99 labtec (I removed it from the case and put in OnStar location).

Now - it could handle a bit more gain, and I don't have any mic boost setting in the OS. Thing is, for native SD commands it works close to flawlessly. For Dragon Naturally Speaking, it's a bit harder and not as accurate, and the same goes for MV4SD. It's easy to understand why: SD there's all of 40 commands or so that I have configured, and that's all the software needs to listen for. With the others, there are many more possibilities.

I'm looking into getting a USB mic adapter (think Radio Shack has one), or the cheapest USB soundcard with mic input so that I'll get higher gain on the microphone. Once that's done, I think recognition will be much better.

Andrea USB mic is very, very good especially for noise cancellation (echo is another story, but we have other threads on that)...I just have nowhere to hide it in the car well enough for my tastes.

I checked and I am using the Vinyl sound drivers but I couldnt find noise cancellation anywhere within the software app though. Any ideas?

That's it for now. My 2 cents...

    Per

I use Road Runner as my preferred front end and it uses a voice control plugin as well by taking advantage of the MS speech SDK voice recognition. With it I use the andrea USB superbeam microphone. Works great. The key is to have a push to talk button. Something that tells it to "listen" for a specified amount of time after that button is pressed. I believe this is how the Microsoft Sync system works in the new fords. Otherwise there is just too much confusion with road noise and other noises in the car. It also pauses the music for 3 seconds after the button is pressed to allow an even more quieter environment. The pause timer and listening timer are both configurable along with voice responses and a bunch of other goodies. Maybe not the easiest plug and play type of software SD is aiming for but it works really well.

Just thought I would chime in from RR land..

I agree thunderstick. SD and MV4SD also use a trigger switch and then mute the music...otherwise it's too hard of a job. Timeout isn't configurable, though.
