god_of_cpu: with all the negative comments about StreetDeck I just thought I would throw it this out.

Congrats on devloping a full system that can be sold as a package. I think it will be great for thoose that are looking for a package that can be easily instaleld and run. I believe that a large majority of the users are misreading your intentions. StreetDeck is by no means a package for the majority of mp3car users, and you are not selling it as one. That is shown by your seperation from mp3car.com and opening streetdeck.com. yes you have a forum here on mp3car.com (so does phoneco) to interest fellow enthusists who might want to help beta or develop for this program.

This is the same as microsoft versus open. you have created a mraketable product that will be sellable to the masses. simple to use and effective (microsoft) the other side is that the free software will still be out there and continue to be developed by the enthusiasts.

I guess streetdeck is to carputers as Charmed Quark is to Home Theater PCs

    ....except not so ugly

you're not just getting a skinnable front end, that can be used to incorporate a bunch of plugins, its a full package

Sounds a little one sided to me.. why even have a forum if users can't freely talk...

There will be a Developer Edition released soon for mp3car users though without hardware. We have not established pricing or requirements for it, but it will be marketed only to developers. This means no support for platform specific issues and limited distribution.
So what exactly makes this better for the enthusiast than the numerous free projects that can be purchased and the commercial nav systems that can added in? Does the developer tools actually give access to the underlying navteq data so that customized graphics can be made?

Not going into details about the benefits that StreetDeck has over some other front ends, which are accessible from the dev enviornment, what the StreetDeck IDE offers is ease of use and shorter development time. Its similar to the difference between programming in visual basic and C++ with a text editor. You can accomplish just about all the same things in no matter which you choose, but in VB you don't have to be an programming expert just to create a simple program. The same thing holds true for programming in the StreetDeck IDE. It offers intellisense and allows you to drag and drop skinned controls so you don't have to know alot about the StreetDeck API, just by dragging and dropping things you can create a pretty complete program that will be safe for in car use taking advantage of the StreetDeck touchscreen GUI.

You can access vector data in navigation, but you can change any of the map colors through the IDE and place controls and images on top of the map as well as get navigation events when your position chanes or other nav things occur.

    regarding purchasing

so let me get this straight; you will not be selling any version of streetdeck unless purchased with the hardware? i understand the benefits of doing that (easier to troubleshoot isssues, maintain code, etc), however, even if I were to offer $50-$75 on the spot for the software to be able to beta test with my asus pundit-r setup, and allow me to use it past the beta test stage (release version), you would still turn it down?

Edit: I code in asp.net, specifically vb.net and c#; would this allow me the use of the developer version of streetdeck? i'd be happy to work with others on a plugin or what not if that is the requirement.
