    Confused about double-din availability...

    When I watch this CNET video with Robert Wray, the clear implication is the double-DIN installation is practically nothing more than an option when purchasing the StreetDeck - either choose the single-DIN sliding screen or a double-DIN.

    I find myself going in circles, however, in my attempts to purchase the StreetDeck with a screen that would allow this double-DIN installation. The only part I see listed at mp3car.com is this, but there are no options here other than NOT purchasing a monitor. If I follow correctly, I am to buy this and then purchase a different screen? If so, what touchscreen should I buy? I see no recommendations for touchscreens to install into the double-DIN slot from either streetdeck.com or mp3car.com.

    Can anyone help clarify this double-DIN situation for me?

    You get the screen you want and you mold it into your dash like everyone else has done.
    In the video, he clearly states that the molding of the screen into the dash is "a couple hourse work". I'd say it's more than a couple.

    And the monitor that the Streetdeck comes with is a flip-out monitor (MTSVO-SC), according to the store. I'm willing to bet that if you contact the mp3car.com store you can discuss monitor options for your particular project.

    Most of the complete platforms talked about in the video are still upcoming products. Right now the only way to do StreetDeck is a semi custom install, putting the screen up front and the computer in the trunk. This will change in the future. I can't confirm or deny any StreetDeck products not yet released other then to say we are working on a bunch of different platforms that should offer much easier install times.

    Thanks for the quick replies. The "semi custom install" part I am completely fine with - mainly because I will likely go the lazy route and let the same genius that installed my current system (including hacks to open/close my top from 40-feet away, stealth rear deck with 2 10" downward-firing JL subs, and other niceties) will be taking on this effort. The computer will take the place of my CD changer, and sit inside the front trunk with the three JL amplifiers already there.

    As a programmer, my job in whole process will be merely to understand enough of the integration to let a custom installer do his (fabrication and installation) part without getting tricked up in VGA driver problems and other things I would prefer not to pay him to have to sort through. In addition, I need enough backup knowledge to push through his own trepidation in implementing against his current recommendation for the AVIC-Z1 - while offering a slick UI and a truly state-of-the-art nav, I find being limited to ripping purchased CDs one by one to place MP3s into the HD is an insult to my intelligence.

    Although there are tons of features that interest me, my only real focus - and every system I find seems limited in some way - is around MP3 file transfer (via either wi-fi, CD, etc.), double-din graphical navigation of that library, and playback sound quality. My sound system will likely surface any limitations in quality. Whatever is pushed out of the streetdeck will be going to one of three amps, each focused toward one of low, mid, or high frequencies, matched to a total of 12 speakers. Although 1500 watts, the system is designed more around sound quality than quantity - but yes, I could set of a car alarm if I wanted to.

    Just wanted to give you a better idea of the goals of my particular project. If you have any other thoughts on what I am doing (like "you idiot, don't you realize you can't do ___ without ___"), feel free to give me a piece of your mind.

    And DarquePervert, I will follow your embarrassingly obvious recommendation to actually contact mp3car.com store for any recommendations for a good touchscreen for the install. Who would have thought of actually asking someone?

    Just to clarify,

    So there is not a monitor on the market that is a perfect snap-in double-din fit?

    I can see fabricating something when you have an odd-shaped opening but there is a large handful of cars that have a perfect double-din opening.

    There are several aftermarket head-units that drop right in to such an opening so why wouldn't there be a monitor that drops in?

    I guess someone could stand to make a profit if they made a double-din mounting mold for one of the popular screens sold on www.mp3car.com. I know I'd buy one.

    I'm glad you spoke up. I keep thinking I'm missing something on this whole thing, and wondering why I am unable to find "DDIN-ready" or something similar when I browse through the selection of screens. I see all these custom jobs with their screens installed and wondering what they did. And watching the video (link above) and hearing Robert Wray say the "in-dash custom solution is something that will take a couple hours by a professional" makes me think there must be an easy fit to pull this off. I mean, I would expect just mounting the PC, running the wires, pulling off the dash, mounting a screen, bolting, and putting everything back in and testing would take at least a "couple hours" even if the screen bolted right into a double-DIN enclosure.

    But doing custom fabrication in that time? Is that what I'm understanding will be involved? I mean, I have the guy to do it alright, but this seems unnecessarily excessive for such a "typical" use.

    Well, there is a double-din solution that worked for me even though the design was for a WRX. It is the Mechatroniks WRX Bolt-in kit. They are actually sold by MP3car.com Store and also from http://www.mechatroniks.com/wrx/index.html. I purchased one of these kits and a standard dash kit for my car and the install only took a few minutes for the LCD, installing the PC was a different ballgame. So technically, there are options, but it is a matter of taking the chance to see if your car is capable of supporting the kit. Give it a shot, it might be worth it. Oh by the way, the LCD kit is actually an ITX motherboard chassis also, so no need to mount the computer in the trunk...check out my install for pics.

    The Mechatroniks kit is a step in the right direction but I don't think it is designed for a true double-din opening. I thought I read somewhere that people had to do some serious modifications to it in order to get it to work with other cars.

    The active area of most 7" widescreen displays will fit inside the dimensions of a double DIN (4"x7"), however, the metal border around all of the LCDs I have seen (including Xenarc, Lilliput, and a handful of greymarket LCDs I have seen) makes the complete LCD slightly larger which is the primary reason why there isn't a bolt on generic double DIN kit.

    I don't think you guys understand. If you were to buy a double-din headunit, depending on your vehicle, you would most likely have to purchase a standard Metra dash kit to adapt the headunit into the dash. The Mechatroniks is the same concept. If your dash is big enough for a double-din headunit, it should be big enough for the Mechatroniks. The Mechatroniks solution serves double purposes: it houses the LCD and it is a chasis for the computer itself. The only drawback is mounting the harddrive. I chose to suspend the harddrive inside the chasis using zipties, but I am sure others found a better a solution. I just think people are too afraid to spend the money and purchase the kit without knowing for sure that it will fit.
