Exclamation Streetdeck on the new Ultra Mobile PC!

When can we see these being sold in the MP3car store? I'll be first in line to buy one!

From this year's Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco, CNET's Justin Jaffe gives a first look at the new Ultra Mobile PC and Consumer Laptop Concept. Intel's Director of Marketing, Brad Graff, also shows off new software from StreetDeck that turns the PC into an interactive media center.

    justin says umm....ummm...alot

brad has the best line though:
"Potentially, this [Streetdeck] can be mounted in a car..."

I have to say, i like the "click and it zooms into the picture until it fills the whole screen" feature. Very nice touch.

That is sick!!!!! Do you know how much wiring I could have saved with that thing. But seriously, that is cool. I always said palm pilots, cell phones are all cool that they are portable but all lack one thing... screen size. This thing would be nice to take around as a multimedia center. I'm assuming it was running off batteries.
    What is the battery life?
    Hard drive size?
    Memory?
    etc.....

These things are still just in prototype form. The goal is to build a pocketable full function computer that will sell for around $500. The first UMPCs available will definitly not be all that. They will be relatively cheap, relatively fast, and relatively small compared to various devices today. No official specs or pricing have been released yet of anything though.

Great job on getting big name recognition! How much of a cut does Intel get?

Now wait, the models you showed us before retailed for 2.5K. What is going to happen to that device if these UMPCs ae going to replace it? Was the demo model with SD what is going to be sold in the enxt few years? What sucks for the MP3car guys is that at $500-$1000 these machines will make our custom jobs virtually over the counter jobs...

Well I think were still a couple years away from a product that can installed by anyone in five minutes, look completely stock, and give you full computer power like a custom job, but thats the goal were aiming for.

As to what will happen to mp3car community, I think it will only make it get bigger and better. A consumer level carputer will only mean that mp3car and other companies will start making a lot more products specifically for car computing. It sure would be nice to have an AM/FM computer controlled radio or a cheap optical input amp. I dont think anything we produce will mean we have done everything there is to do with computers in cars. Theres always going to be a way to push the limit and there will always be a community that does this before its easy to do. Just like the internet killed off BBS and all the BBS moved over to become web masters, solving the simple problems with carputers, will open up a whole lot more advanced ones to hack away at.

Those things are gonna be SICK!

On the topic of "what will happen to Mp3Car Community"...Will it make this forum stronger? No. Adding Newbies that dont have a clue will not help the Forums. The Forums could BE the help maybe. The novelty of owning a Carputer will be almost like it was owning a Razr the first couple months. Now my MOM carries one. Dont read me wrong, I am not trying to sound like I am probably coming across, but I have seen this same thing happen in my industry and it is going to happen here too. I worked in Radio Control for 14 years (and I started before I was out of high school) and literally watched the demise created by Ready to Run vehicles. Why waste 14 hours building when you can buy one aready to go? Well, because then you know how to work on them. But little Timmy doesnt want to have to wrench on the thing, so the parents buy him a RTR and bring it back daily for help. These R/C toys, as with our Carputers, are a HOBBY and are typically not 100% foolproof like the John Q Public wants them to be. Now that you dont need to be in the "hobby" side of carputers, we will all just need to get used to hearing "where is the "any" key?" all over again.

    Ok, thats my rant.

Its true and that's the natural progression of things. I guess it just kills me that we, the settlers of this "land", who tried to do something novel and special, have to suck it up and realize that this is going mainstream and soon, in a few years, its going to be as commonplace as the know-how of formatting a computer.
